According to Ward, the creation phase is the early entrepreneurial stage of the company as the entrepreneur assembles the beginnings of an organization geared towards bringing the organization’s first product or service to market. In this phase, the Creator’s role is to create the organization from scratch, breathe life into the organization, and establish the organization out of nothing (Ward, 2003). When Spielberg was in college, he wrote a screenplay titled, Amblin’. This movie was about a teenage couple making their way through the desert to get to a beach that symbolized paradise. Amblin' became a reality after Spielberg was introduced to aspiring producer Dennis Hoffman. This movie, only 26 minutes long, led to his becoming the youngest director ever to be signed to a long-term deal with a major Hollywood studio (Universal) after Sid Sheinberg, then the vice-president of production for Universal's TV arm, saw the film (Amblin', 2011). Spielberg was not so awed by this attention from a studio bigwig that he did not have some misgivings. “I was still several months shy of my twenty-first birthday, and I hadn’t graduated from college.” But Sheinberg said, ‘Do you want to graduate, or do you want to be a film director?’ (Sanello, 1996). The movie had a $15,000 budget. In 1968, his friend Dennis Hoffman provided financing of approximately $10,000 for the production of the film. Spielberg and Hoffman agreed to the “1968 Amblin’ Contract” that prohibited Spielberg from receiving money for directing Amblin’ and was to direct movies presented by Hoffman for the next ten years. Amblin’ received many awards including the Atlanta Film Festival and Venice Film Festival (Amblin', 2011).

In the film industry, there are directors who merely take someone else’s vision and express it in their own way on film, then there are those who take their own visions and use any means necessary to express their visions on film. The latter of these two types of directors are called auteurs. Not only do auteurs write the scripts from elements that they know and love in life, but they direct, produce, and sometimes act in their films as well. Three prime examples of these auteurs are: Kevin Smith, Spike Lee and Alfred Hitchcock.
Lisa Cholodenko grew up in Los Angeles and she began her film careers working as an assistant editor; however, she then moved to New York and earned an MFA in screenwriting and direction at the Columbia University School of arts. At Columbia University School of Arts, Cholodenko filmed her first short movie Dinner Party. Besides being a director, Lisa Cholodenko also was a film professor at Columbia University, an advisor and is currently on the Board of Governs of Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science. It was surprising to be able to find out how active Cholodenko is in the film industry and in the university she attended. This portrays how committed Cholodenko is to creating successful movies and to be a part of others film victory.

In summary this critique of the film based on qualities of a leader has given me even more perspective on what makes a leader. In the film Fonda did not lead by being the leader of the group. Instead he lead the others by using their own personalities to further his cause. He did not give orders like I typically think of a leader does. Leadership can be much more than being at the front and in fact a person can lead from a position of equal standing as Fonda did being just one of the twelve jurors.
For the next three decades, the movie industry in the United States and the rest of the world operated by according to these principles. Cultural, social and economic changes ensured the demise of this system after the Second World War. A new way to run Hollywood was required. Beginning in 1962, Lew Wasserman of Universal Studios emerged as the key innovator in creating a second studio system. He realized that creating a global media conglomerate was more important than simply being vertically integrated.

It is hard to imagine a person who has not heard of Steven Spielberg. He is one of the most renown, if not the most renown, American filmmakers of the century. His films have captivated and helped develop imaginations of contemporary society and remain among the most successful films ever made.

In organizations aspiring for growth and continual improvement, relationships are more intricate and alternatives more numerous than the either/or imposition implied by the notion of leaders and followers. Practically no one leads all of the time. Leaders also work as followers; all in all, “everyone uses a portion of their day following and another portion leading” (Galie and Bopst, 2006, p. 11).
The only way to develop the kind of leaders a changing organization needs is to make leadership a critical criterion for promotion, and then manage people’s careers to develop it.
