Books are a veritable treasure. They can truly be one’s best friends for life and one need never be lonely in the company of books. Reading is such a fascinating habit that the deeper you delve into it, the more you are drawn to it. Not only do books provide entertainment and knowledge, but they also sharpen the intellect, stimulate imagination and enhance vocabulary. Once a reader, always a reader and voracious readers always stand apart and distinguish themselves from the others in all walks of life.
Interestingly, the reading habit is best imbibed in early childhood. It is not a skill that can be acquired later when the pressures of academics gradually become too time-consuming. On October 10th, 2017 at Springhurst Elementary School, I conducted a “Reading Interest Survey” and the “Elementary Reading Attitude Survey.” These surveys were conducted on a 1st grade student, Jax, to determine what his feelings are towards reading in different settings, what genres he prefers to read, and interests. It was found that Jax doesn’t mind reading, but prefers a few different topics. This was evident through his raw score of 30 on recreational reading, and a raw score of 31 on academic reading.
Pearson UK (n.d.) stated “Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. In fact, reading for pleasure is more likely to determine whether a child does well at school than their social or economic background.”
Reading is on the decline and our reading skills are declining right along with the amount of reading we do. This is happening right across the board through both genders, all age groups and education levels, people are busy and they just do not have time to read books that they are not required to read for school or work. There are serious consequences to this neglect of reading that will continue to worsen if ignored. We need to take notice of what is happening to our culture and stop this situation from continuing, we must act to correct these issues that we are faced with. Ever since I was a child, I've never liked reading. Every time I was told to read, I would just sleep or do something else instead. In "A Love Affair with Books" by Bernadete Piassa tells a story about her passion for reading books. Piassa demonstrates how reading books has influenced her life. Reading her story has given me a different perspective on books. It has showed me that not only are they words written on paper, they are also feelings and expressions.

My dad taught me that books could be my teachers, my mom taught me that our backyard could be my classroom, and my sister showed me that you could bring books into the swimming pool. I did not know it when I would spend hours in the pool reading a book that my parents weren’t encouraging it in vain, but my family life, for good reason, was centered on books. I was excited to read to the children and define the role as an adult of creating a reading experience for young people. In the Literature for Children book by David Russell, it discusses the adults’ responsibilities as bringing children and books together, giving the children as many different types of literature as possible, encouraging honest and open responses, to challenge children to explore those responses and learn something about themselves, to provide them with the critical language to clearly express their responses, to encourage tolerance, and to encourage mutual understanding. I think its important for me to know these roles because I am approaching the years of adulthood. When I was younger my mother read to me every single night and I believe this was crucial for my development as a child.
While I believe every child is a reader, I do not believe every child will be enthralled with reading all the time. All students have the capability to read and enjoy reading, but just like any other hobby, interest will vary from student to student. The students in my classroom will be encouraged in their reading, be provided with choice, taught how books can take you into another world but, my students will not be forced to read. This paper will illustrate my philosophy of reading through the theories I relate to, the way I want to implement reading and writing curriculum, and the methods I will use motivate my students to read and help them become literate.

Books have been around the world for hundreds of thousands of years. Reading sounds appealing to some people but to other its not ideal to read. Some “People are interested in escape”(Carol Fitzgerald pg.1) . Being raised in a book reading environment can heavily informs the perceptive of others like non readers. Readers are raised to believe that non readers are unintelligent because they don't read book which are the key to knowledge, concentration and vocabulary.
Today, it seems as if it is uncool to read. Teenagers will never admit that they enjoy reading, even if they do. Many of these people are most likely “closet readers.” This phrase describes people who enjoy reading, but are worried that they may be judged for it, by their peers. In “Why Literature?”, Mario Vergas Llosa says it may not be cool, but it is essential to communicate effectively. He attempts to prove that literature is essential, and shouldn’t be an afterthought. Literature should be a cornerstone in every single person’s education. His purpose is to convince readers of the importance of reading, and literature; Llosa achieves this, by building a strong ethos, and targeting a specific audience.
Literature has many purposes, and opens doors to unique worlds. Through Literature, we discover ourselves and world time and again.
Reading to children can teach them skills they’ll need throughout their entire life. Reading aloud not only enhances their skills, it also affects how the their school life is. Being read to regularly is important to maintain the skills that the child learns, the earlier a child is being read to, the more skills they acquire. Parents will benefit from reading also, it creates a bond with their child that last a lifetime. Reading aloud will introduce children to books and reading so they can eventually do it on their own. Reading to children can improve many aspects of their life.
