Pluripotent stem cells are true stem cells with the potential to make any differentiated cell in the body (Stem Cells). These cells can be harvested in a myriad of ways, but the most well known for their controversial reputation are those that come from reproductive techniques and unwanted products of reproduction. In Embryonic stem cells, excess embryos produced during in vitro fertilization procedures are used and Embryonic Germ Cells can be isolated from the precursor to the gonads in aborted fetuses (Stem Cells). Despite their controversy these cells are a host to many great benefits exhibited throughout their long history, with their ability to help cure individuals with countless kinds of debilitating diseases, this is why it should be believed that stem cell research should be carried out and supported, for it allows the production of procedures that help further life through the remnants of un-savable others. Though, it also causing unrest in legislation, and the hearts of individuals with moral aversion toward their use.
Embryotic and Embryonic Germ Stem cells first came into play after the case of Roe v. Wade established that abortion was legal in the United States in 1973 (Abortion Law). Five years later, the first successful human in vitro fertilization resulted in the birth of Louise Brown in England (Brown Law). These developments prompted the federal government to create regulations barring the use of federal funds for research that experimented on human embryos (Johnson and Lui). The potential to reverse diseases is also not a foreign one. Heart Attack, for example, a patient who has suffered from a heart attack and sustained heart damage could have the damaged tissue replaced by healthy new muscle cells (Benefits). In Parkinson 's Disease, the destruction of brain cells in conditions such as Parkinson 's disease can hopefully be reversed with the replacement of new, healthy and functioning brain cells. This is also exhibited in Genetic Defects, because even more promising is the potential to address genetic defects that are present from birth by restoring function and health with the introduction of normal healthy cells that do not have these defects (Benefits).
To conclude, stem cell research can and has done a multitude of things for the medical/healthcare community and can only continue to do if individuals continue to support it.
