Statement of Purpose Health Care is a Right Not a Privilege – Jan Spence, Kimberley Clark Foundation. Regrettably the above slogan perfectly suits the present condition of healthcare in my country. An endeavor to bring about a change is the prime motive for me in aspiring to be a Public Health Professional. In present time the world faces a lot of changes in healthcare systems. In my home country India lot of conversions are happening. The changes varies from eliminating chronic epidemic disease, removing infectious diseases, nutritional deficiencies, insecure pregnancies. According to a survey by the WHO (World Health Organization) in India in the year 2011, the major causes of death of children below age 5 was due to lack of treatment facilities of basic diseases like diarrhea and pneumonia. This compound threat to the nation’s health and development needs an intensive public health response that can ensure cost effective interventions and an equitable health care through an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. It makes the job of a healthcare professional difficult than ever before. Therefore, I have decided to chart a career in the vast field of Public Health, which prompts me to pursue a Masters program at your prestigious university. The study of the biological sciences was tantalizing as I found myself passionately getting engrossed in it with every passing academic year. Subjects like human anatomy, physiology and microbiology have made me realize the significance of health and hygiene, especially the contribution of dental hygiene to human life. Hence after the successful completion of my high school study I enrolled at an undergraduate program in Dental Surgery at the Dharmsinh Desai University. Overall these professional experiences till date have helped me enhance my innate qualities of perseverance, aptitude, tenacity, patience and resourcefulness thereby helping me build a strong character. Having acquired a rigorous training, I envisage myself to be a proficient public health professional working at an organization like the WHO to advocate the slogan ‘Prevention is better than cure’ either within my country or across the globe. My ultimate goal is to work for a deep rooted cause of oral cancer in India, in addition to policy making and its implementation to prevent the consumption of tobacco and as a consequence averting precancerous and cancerous conditions which affect a large population in India. Hence, I strongly believe that a Masters course in Public Health at your esteemed institute will enable me to fulfill my aspiration.
