The University Hospital Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital that provides specialist and general services to the people of Bristol, England and the wider South West. The hospital is already recognized for the strength of their clinical services, research portfolio in cancer, and pediatric services. The hospital employs more than 7,000 (uhbristol/About Us, 2013) health care workers and operates across eight hospital sites. One of the hospital’s goals is to be recognized for the excellence of the outcomes they achieve for their patients and the quality of the patient experience while under their care.
In 2010, the Board of University Hospital Bristol began a process in order to ensure that the hospital continues to improve the quality of their care and the productivity of their health care services. The aim of this strategic planning was to be able to formulate a clear direction for the next ten years that will ensure that they not only survive the challenging economic times ahead but that their three core businesses of clinical services, research and innovation and teaching and learning continue to develop through the formulation and adoption of appropriate strategies supported by their rigorous implementation (Monitor.gov, 2010).
The hospital hopes to achieve their aims by being clear with their partners and staff about their mission, vision and values. The University Hospital Bristol NHS Foundation Trust is a health care organization focused on the profitability of people. What this tells us is that the practice of medicine is based upon the community in which it resides. Without those patients, without those emergencies, and without the need to practice, the very organizations we depend upon would no longer be needed, much less be profitable. To have a strategic plan that’s main focus is the improvement of patient satisfaction and efficiency is to validate that point. The Bristol hospital has a strategic plan that allows for growth and financial solvency while benefiting the community at large. As a health care organization, that is the best plan for the future; community, growth, and the desire to heal.
