The Pennsylvania State Capitol
Pennsylvania has a wide variety of beautiful historical buildings that reflect many different styles of architecture. They include historical homes, unique covered bridges, government buildings, and breathtaking churches. Some of Pennsylvania’s most recognized examples of great architecture are Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater” and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts located in Philadelphia. However, the one building that I think of when it comes to great architecture is The Pennsylvania State Capitol. The Pennsylvania State Capitol building, located in Harrisburg, is a great example that represents a variety of architectural elements and a rich history.
The interesting history of the capitol building begins back in 1810. This is when Harrisburg was named the new capital city of Pennsylvania (“CPC Home Page”). Since then, three buildings have sat upon Harrisburg’s Capitol Hill. Local architect, Stephen Hills, was chosen to design the first building. In 1819, Hills began to construction on the structure. The building was completed in 1822, and cost a total of $135,000. The first capitol building existed for seventy-five years, until a fire destroyed it in 1897 (“Capitol”).
Soon after the fire, legislature decided to tear down the remains of the damaged structure and replace it with a larger and more stylish design. Chicago architect, Henry Ives Cobb, was selected to design and build the second capitol. The government gave him a budget of only $550,000, which was not nearly enough to reproduce the size and design that the legislature had envisioned. Due to limited funds, Cobb was unable to finish his intended design. Legislature was embarrassed and unimpres...

... that evokes pride in its citizens, and will continue to be appreciated by future generations.
Finally, I feel that The Pennsylvania State Capitol building embodies a unique balance of architecture and art. It is a place where the residents of the Pennsylvania can visit and learn about the significance and history of our state. It makes me proud to know that such a beautiful piece of architecture is only a few minutes away.

America, it has always had everything we need, except for when colonists flocked in the early 1600´s. Its 1609, you and a group of people have been on a boat for months. Now you aren't even sure if the America's exist. But once you lost every single drop of hope, you see it. A beautiful swampy land. This place makes you feel like you have a lot of opportunities, there’s a river, a lot of wildlife, and not that many Native’s around. It seems perfect, that’s what people that saw posters of Jamestown thought in England. Jamestown seemed, perfect, appeared perfect…
Architecture is a way in which powerful and wealthy governments could portray cultural beliefs and values.
Influenced by his readings of ancient and modern architectural writings, Jefferson gleaned the best from both his readings and from his observations in Europe, creating his own personal style of architecture, a mix of Neoclassicism’s Roman temples, and Palladian villa. Partly, because of Jefferson’s influence, our federal buildings set an American precedent for the neoclassical style. Jefferson’s admiration for neoclassical style went so far as to design candlesticks based on the Corinthian order.
First of all, the Capitol had a large significance during revolutionary times in American history. It was the location of the meeting place for the House of Burgesses. Likewise, it was the place where the House of Burgesses made the decision to recede Virginia from England, becoming the first colony to speak for independence from England. That meeting paved the road of Independence for the other colonies to follow. After that, the burgesses had their final meeting in the Capitol before moving to the new capital, Richmond. The Capitol served many people after that, acting as an admiralty court, a law school, a military hospital (Rev. War), a grammar school, and a female academy. Thus, the Capitol has majorly helped in affirming
While the Texas State Capitol is known for its grandness and austerity with its 308 feet height and large scale, its symmetry and balance which contributes to its formality, and the use of granite which gives the building a sense of heaviness and power, the architecture also has a humanistic side.
The Capitol building was overall the building in Colonial Williamsburg with the most important events that occurred, and the most political talk going on. It was used often by the House of Burgesses, therefore being useful in the event of war or politics. People should commemorate the Capitol Building in Colonial Williamsburg for its importance to the people back then, now, and its connection to the Colonial Williamsburg motto, “The future may learn from the past.”
Our nation's revolution was a great achievement in U.S History. With the dawn of a new nation, there would have to be a central location to make the new decisions of our country. Our capitol has stood as the heart of our country since the late 1700s. The United States capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. For almost two centuries it has housed the meeting chambers of the senate and the House of Representatives. Begun in 1793, the capitol building has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored. Today our capitol stands as a monument to the American people and their government. (AOC.gov)
The way its improved this country truly shows it's a symbol and the top of the pyramid. This also goes along the line that Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and George Washington, the heart of this country, went there. However, that also shows that other symbols of the U.S.A. came and made one united representation. The Capitol also leaves a symbolic trail behind because there they changed the government. What they did was burn down the British flag and created a new court setup affecting the government today. Ultimately, the value of the Capitol indicates the importance it affected the U.S.A
For this purpose the architecture plays an important role. Designing this building so that it is reminiscent of the Romanesque and Gothic style makes a lot of sense for this type of building. Not only does the building itself reference an important historical time period, but this design also highlights the building and makes it very recognizable from other buildings in the area. These aspects help it serve its purpose as one of the signature Smithsonian buildings and one of the administrative centers.
Philadelphia is not only one of the thirteen original colonies, the building where the Declaration of Independence was created and signed is there. The Historic District has many places to visit that go back to the beginning of our country. And the cemetery at Christ’s Church is where Benjamin Franklin is visited. A person could spend a day visiting the many places in the downtown historic area.
Renaissance architecture can be classified by Classical Roman, or Greco Roman, elements and was followed by the Baroque architecture, and Gothic architectural styles. Examples of Classical Roman elements would be basilicas, columns, domes, as well as the accentuation placed of balance, proportion, and geometry. The Palazzo Farnese interior shows a significant amount of arches and Renaissance paintings on the inside. On the exterior of the Palazzo Farnese a large number of columns are visible, as well as the geometry of the windows located above the columns. Carnegie Hall, in New York City, New York was opened in 1891 and shows drastic similarities with the Palazzo Farnese. With the architectural details of Carnegie Hall it can be shown that

I came across many monuments in my research for this paper. I was very intrigued by monuments in New York City. Many people forget about the less talked about monuments. Such as the Flatiron Building and Gracie Mansion. Of course they are those well-known monuments as well. There is the UN building, which has been around since 1949. Penn Station is also another well-known monument. It has been around since the early 1900’s. There are many others including Grand Central Station, the George Washington Bridge, the Cathedral of St. John and Yankee Stadium just to name a few.
The moment I stepped onto the dirty, rough, Washington DC concrete, I knew that I was in love. The city was something out of a movie, like New York City but less concrete jungle and more monumental preservation. Yet, from all of this sightseeing and wandering, one place seemed to stand out as the pinnacle of the city’s beauty: the National Cathedral. From the outside, the imposing structure rose tall enough to touch the sky, so white it was nearly blinding. The inside was not any less breathtaking. The stained glass, the wooden arches, even the catacombs underneath were stylistically magnificent. Any flaws only seemed to serve in making the design more stunning. This, I thought, is what real beauty looks like.
Metal and wood, bricks and stone; Webster’s Dictionary defines a building as “a structure (such as a house, hospital, school, etc.) with a roof and walls that is used as a place for people to live, work, do activities, store things, etc.” Buildings are all this and more. Buildings tell a story. The design of a building reveals a story of the time period in which it was built. It allows a glimpse into the past or a peek into the future. For the designer or architect, it is an expression of what inspires them. From the ancient ruins in Greece to Dorton Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina; architecture inspires us.
