Based on past experience with Starbucks both as consumers, and undergraduate students studying about successful business, we predict that Starbucks will be a theory Y organization, that promotes empowerment within its entry-level staff. Our first impression of Starbucks when we enter a local store is simply that we are going to get a quality product. The staff always remains professional but appears to enjoy their jobs. You don’t see Starbucks employees being yelled at and it appears that all the staff is well trained and knows how to perform their jobs.
The wildly successful coffee shop that can be seen around the world started from a humble beginning with just one single store in Seattle’s Pike Place market, as a retailer of whole beans and ground coffee. It was because of three academics, Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegel, and Gordon Bowker, that “Starbucks Coffee, Tea, and Spice” was started. The company went through a couple adjustment periods. In 1882 Howard Schultz was hired to supervise marketing and retail stores. It wasn’t long after that he decided to step down and start his own coffee stores after disagreements with reference to what the Starbucks experience should entail. Starbucks Tea and Spice once again came back into Schultz’s life in 1887 when Jerry Baldwin and Gordon Bowker sold the rights to their company. Howard Schultz took this as on opportunity to combine companies with the name Starbucks Corporation. In 1992 Starbucks Corporation went public. Due to successful leadership and business practices, Starbucks can be found serving its customers in over 50 countries and 17,000 locations.

Starbucks Corporation is one of the world's largest coffee roaster, marketer, and retailer of coffee. In 1971, three entrepreneurs, Jordan Bowker, Zev Siegel, and Jerry Baldwin opened first Starbucks store in Seattle, WA. In 1982, Howard Schultz joined Starbucks as a marketing director. He came up with the idea to make Starbucks a coffee house chain but Starbucks founders rejected the idea and he left the company in 1985. Later, Schultz started his own coffee bar named “Il Giornale”. In a couple of years, he was able to buy Starbucks Corp. from its original owners. He renamed his coffee bars "Il Giornale" as Starbucks. In 1987, Starbucks opened its first store outside the Seattle in Vancouver and Chicago. In year 1982 today’s CEO Howard Schultz joined Starbucks as a director of retail operations and marketing. Since that time the company started to grow rapidly. In just few years of operations more stores have been opened expanding a business around the country and around the world. Now, Starbucks has nearly 20,000 stores in 60 countries and it still growing opening more and more stores and moving into new countries. But the corporation is not only selling a coffee. When the company became more powerful and more valuable, Howard Schultz along with other board members and a president, started to get involved in all kinds of programs to make better coffee, but also to make the world better. These days a company recognizes itself as a part of the neighborhood it operates within.
Another major factor contributing to their success was how they treated their employees. The partners or baristas were offered benefits and profit sharing which is not common among hourly employees. This created a culture of dedication among these employees which resulted in very low turnover rates. This helped with the good customer service that was expected by the patrons. Also Starbucks was always “self-evaluating” themselves through secret shoppers that would report on their experience; this contributed to all the stores keeping on their A game. These results were continually tracked so they could identify patterns, both good and bad.

Founded by three partners in Seattle in 1971 in Seattle’s, renowned open-air Pike Place Market and Starbuck’s was named after the first mate in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Howard Schultz joined Starbucks in 1982 as director of retail operations and marketing, he returned to the United States with 1500 coffee bars. Schultz had recognized an opportunity to develop a similar retail coffee bar culture in Seattle. The first coffee house was tested in 1985 serving the first Starbucks café Latte, as well as introducing its Christmas Blend (Ferrell, Fraedrich and Ferrell, 2015).
Starbucks began its retention plan by analyzing their employees’ needs. The analysis drew variables of importance, such as positive culture, employee development, and benefits. As a result of the analysis, Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz, came up with a plan to start a long-term retention program in his company. Mr. Schultz made sure that “he made it a point to put himself at the top of a respect pyramid in which he would be sure to be kind to everyone in the company with whom he interacted, with them passing on the respectful treatment, right down to the pyramid’s base”(“How Starbucks retains its employees”). The company also set up an online portal for employee development. Starbucks also launched a program to help its employees to achieve a college education. In 2002, unexpected findings of a market research showed problems regarding customer satisfaction and brand meaning for Starbucks customers. The situation was unacceptable for a company whose overall objective is to build the most recognized and respected brand in the world. Starbucks was supposed to represent a new and different place where any man would relax and enjoy quality time, alone or with others. But the market research showed that in the mind of the consumers, Starbucks brand is viewed as corporative, trying to expand endlessly and looking to make lots of money. This huge gap between customers' perception and Starbucks' values and goals called for immediate action.

Pick up any newspaper and you are likely to find an article about the coffee giant.
