For my analysis, I chose to write about Starbucks Coffee Company and its mission statement. Starbucks’ mission statement reads, “To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.” We all know that Starbucks has enjoyed a huge amount of growth over the past 10+ years, and it is clear that they are seeing that success because they are putting their mission into action. Reading the mission statement, it’s easy to identify Starbucks’ areas of focus: the human spirit, coffee, and community. The company’s “About Us” web pages align with its mission statement.
What is the human spirit? As defined by Wikipedia, the human spirit is defined as, “…the spiritual or mental part of humanity.” Further, “The human spirit includes our intellect, emotions, fears, passions, and creativity.” It seems like a big task to appeal to the human spirit. So, how does Starbucks do it? According to the “About Us” pages on their website, it’s all about creating a connection and engaging with their customers. Its website states that their values include, “Creating a culture of warmth and belonging, where everyone is welcome.” This immediately and wholly supports the goal of the mission statement which is aimed at the human spirit, and one component of the human spirit is the basic human need of a sense of love and belonging. Starbucks also makes a point to speak to the other attributes of the human spirit and how they address them in their mission. For example, Starbucks says on its website’s “About Us” pages that it speaks to customers’ creativity by featuring selected music “chosen for its artistry and appeal.”

A variety of projects currently exist, and Starbucks encourages their customers and employees to volunteer in these programs, which includes veterans and military support, creating jobs, diversity & inclusion, and opportunity for youth.
Starbucks does a great job on their website in summarizing that their mission is “To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.” It is easy to see why Starbucks is more than just coffee, but an experience of emotions, senses and coffee.
