Jonah Rockoff of Columbia said “When you put a lot of weight on one measure, people will try to do well on that measure.” (Porter) Such is a big problem with the current methods of standardized testing. Grading a student based on a test score is unfair and unjust, and if one were to view it that way, dehumanizing. Creating new ways of teaching like Common Core, which tries to make students only proof of learning. Standardized testing isn’t the right way to teach. Putting so much weight on standardized testing, like Jonah said, is going to make schools want to look good, schools change test answers, or fudge the scores if one prefers. Some teachers also teach that test specifically, or use other methods to keep getting funding from the government. Leave it to the government to make a law like the No Child Left Behind Act, and then make standards to where schools HAVE to make students improve, or they have to face consequences like a state takeover, losing their accreditation, or something so severe as to the school getting shut down.
“ The law created dozens of ways for schools to fail, and very few ways to help them succeed or reward them for succeeding.” (Rich, Motoko, Lewin) states Arne Duncan, Education Secretary, on the No Child Left Behind Act. In theory, this act could have been a brilliant idea, but what it has evolved into, treating kids as test scores and using them as pawns to try and keep a school open, is not okay. Children do need to learn, yes, but measuring all of the things they have learned on a couple of tests that could change their whole lives isn’t just. And when elementary grade students can write a speech about how bad standardized testing is, it is time for a change. (Lonon)

Even after all of this it still makes more sense to be gone with standardized tests. If teachers are that desperate they will find a way to try and cheat the system; some will get caught some won’t, and the ones that don’t are unjust and not fit to be a teacher. No Child Left Behind should be reformed in a way that will actually be helpful to students and not threaten schools if they don’t meet requirements. Schools shouldn’t have to be threatened with funding cuts if their students are not the best. Gifted students and slow students should be taught the same as everyone and not be left out because they are the two ends of the scale. Students need to be face to face with situations they will really need in life rather than insane questions that most people will never see.
