Dance. It is to move one’s feet or body, or both, rhythmically in a pattern of steps, especially to the accompaniment of music. On Friday, April 11, 2014, I went to the Young Choreographers Dance Concert at Windwards Community College’s Paliku Theatre. The dance concert shows many of the Mid-Pacific School of the Arts (MPSA) Dance Program students and their amazing choreography. The dance concert is almost entirely student directed with twelve total dances. Students from seventh to twelfth grade were participating in this dance concert. The dance concert is important to attend because there aren’t many opportunities to see live dance in Hawaii so when the opportunity arises, you should take the chance while you can. It also showcases the talent that the MPSA Dance Program has in their dancers.
One dance piece that I found entertaining was Burlesque choreographed by Ariana Anderson. This piece was really entertaining because each of the dancers had a lot of energy and attitude when they were dancing. Something that I thought looked neat was when they were all lined up doing the sam...
Dance is an ever evolving form of art; in much the same way that one can categorize and differentiate between eras and styles of architecture one can also do so with dance. These eras at times have sharp delineations separating them from their antecedents, other times the distinction is far more subtle. Traditional forms of dance were challenged by choreographers attempting to expand the breadth and increase the depth of performance; preeminent among such visionaries was Seattle born dancer and choreographer Mark Morris. Mark Morris' began as one of the millions of hopeful individuals attempting to simply make a career in dance; he not only succeeded but managed to have a lasting effect on the entire landscape of dance.
As a society, we are constantly pairing things together in hopes of enhancing them: apple pie and ice cream, Indians and cowboys, and most relevant to this paper, music and dance. In an art form like ballet, it seems as though music and dance complement each other equally. Truly, it is hard to picture, or perform, a dance without music. However, this may not be the case for music, even if that music is composed specifically for a dance routine. The compilation of the music and the dancing from a scene in the American cowboy ballet Rodeo will be examined to ultimately help us understand they way in which they serve each other as a unit and their ability to function independently.
Dance generally consists of physical movements that require us to use many parts of our body (Olympic Review, 1991 August No. 286). Basic dance or rhythmic and patterned movements are identical throughout the world, in all time and in all cultures, and is a fundamental element of our behavior (Hanley, 1991, p. 385). Dance is a type of sport that usually involves movement of the body, often carried out to different types of music depending on the style. Dance is practiced in many cultures as a form of expression or social relations in a spiritual or performance setting, and is even used to express certain beliefs and ideas. Ballroom dancing in New York gives underprivileged children the opportunity to be exposed to the arts, which is usually a program that is cut from low-income schools. Over Halloween weekend, Dance TCU in concert, performed at Ed Landreth Hall on the TCU campus, was a mid term showcase performed by the students in the TCU School for Classical and Contemporary Dance. The overall mood was very professional. These college level dancers performed various pieces from Giselle to video edited versions of dance to contemporary dances inspired by swing dancing. Each piece was unique and whether the style was classical or contemporary, the execution was very good. The quality of the performance was spectacular and showed all the work that everyone involved in the production has put out to perfect all the aspects of the show come together. While there were some minor technique errors, the staging, costume design, lighting,
The fifth video Castle Walk – And excerpt from How to Dance Through time vol. 2 was very interesting to me. It looked like many different styles of dances put together. I really liked the energy of the dance and that it was performed by one man and one woman. The outfits of the dancers are interesting because it looks like a man is dancing with his maid. I am not sure if that’s how it should be, but I think it’s somehow refreshing.
The Shapes & Reflections 2016 dance concert consisted of well-put together dances from countless genres, most of which were Hip Hop, Modern, World, Tap, Ballet, and Contemporary. I was part of the show, so I received the chance of viewing the dances a multiple amount of times. After observing the show, the two dances I selected that stood out the most to me were “Danse De L’ Amour”, choreographed by Kim Gregg, and “Overload”, choreographed by Julio Velazquez.
