“The Spread of Christianity by the Roman Empire”
Christianity began with Judaism in the Eastern Mediterranean. A man named Jesus, both human and divine, was sent to Earth by God to save his people. He would eventually be put to death to save his people from sin, and rise to open the gates of heaven. The Jews saw in Jesus the fulfillment of their scripture and prophets. For these reasons, they began to follow him, and Christianity began to spread all across the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire facilitated the spread of Christianity by the missionary work, particularly that of St. Paul, the development of a sophisticated government and belief system within the church and the establishment of monasteries.
Paul was a man who apparently was called by God to “function as a prophet for this new Jesus Movement.” This “Jesus Movement” is essentially the scatter of the followers of Jesus after his death. Paul probably saw himself as a prophet to the Gentiles, non-Jews, and even the Jews through his letters. He argued that Christianity was a universal religion, and not only available to the Je...
