When it comes to fixing problems or understanding one exist is very important. One of the problems or concerns that I am looking to address at MSU relates to diversity. Diversity is something that is very important but a lot of times individuals will want to avoid the conversation because they feel that they will offend someone. If we are going to educate students on working in a global society, we have to educate them on diversity. Also faculty, staff, and administration have to be aware of changes in diversity as well. As we move forward we are trying to determine how we roll out diversity training for faculty, staff, and students. We know that some may not be receptive of the training, but we also want to make sure that it is something meaningful, and not something just so that individuals will get a check mark saying they are done.
We are trying to determine how do we do this is it on-line, face-to-face or a combination of both so that the learning outcomes are achieved and are measureable.
Since everyone’s knowledge is different, and you want to make sure that people feel at ease about the conversation. When I do diversity training, I allow the people to understand that before we start the conversation that it is a safe environment. By it being a safe environment, people are able to express themselves, and to say things that may not come out correctly and we will work to fix that. Even when things come out incorrect, I still allow them not to feel bad about themselves but to be a part of the conversation. At the moment, I am a department of one, but diversity needs to be managed and tracked by more than one person and it should be something that is able to be sustain and also change as times changes to ensure that we educate our students, faculty, administrations on the changes and the best practices that exist.
We currently have a diversity council that looks at the diversity on the campus, but we may need to expand this group to ensure that they not only advise the president on how to improve diversity, but look at establishing policies and protocol that the university can use and implement to stay current with whatever the strategic plan for the university will be currently and in the future.
