The Enjoyment of Atlanta
Traveling is one of my favorite things to do. I have visited many places throughout the United States, however, none are as exciting as Atlanta, Georgia. In Atlanta, there are many places to go and sights to see. For example, Six Flags Over Georgia, Stone mountain Park, and the Atlanta Braves Stadium, are all in or near the city of Atlanta.
Six Flags Over Georgia is a theme park containing anything from sweet treats to fun rides. Six Flags provides many activities for all ages. It is not at all uncommon to see famous cartoon characters, such as bugs Bunny, roaming around the park. Olde r children and adults who possess strong stomachs may enjoy riding the various roller coasters available. For example, The Ninja, is my favorite. The Ninja goes up and down steep hills and even loops upside down. Six Flags also has water rides availabl e to keep people cool. My favorite is Thunder river. Last June, I was lucky enough to get caught under the waterfall. Six Flags also has games to play and many souvenir shops. As for the sweets I mentioned earlier, the funnel cakes are absolutely deli cious. I would highly recommend Six Flags as a place to go when visiting the Atlanta area.
Stone Mountain Park is another tourist attraction near Atlanta. The park is located in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Not only is it a fun place to visit, but it is also historical. The mountain is the largest exposed piece of granite in the world. The f ace of the mountain was carved by the same man who carved Mt. Rushmore; however, he did not finish it. The carving, which is located on the top of the mountain, remained unfinished until it became a state park. The establishment of Stone Mountain State Park took place in 1963. The carving represents three key figures of the Confederacy riding their horses. The men included are Ulysses Grant, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis. The width of the carving is three-hundred yards, therefore, the width of a football field. Along with historical museums, the park has campgrounds and horseback riding. Stone Mountain Park also has a water park with a beach and a beautiful golf course.
Gatlinburg, Tennessee is a prime tourist destination that is filled with action packed adventures. Day or night there is never a dull and moment. You can visit the quaint little shops in the light of day or patrol the dark and somewhat wild street of the night. However, you plan to spend your time in Gatlinburg, you are guaranteed to have an awesome time.

In the novel The Bread Givers, there was a Jewish family, the Smolinsky family, that had immigrated from Russia to America. The family consisted of four daughters, a father, and a mother. The family lived in a poverty-stricken ghetto. The youngest of the daughters was Sara Smolinsky, nicknamed ?Iron Head? for her stubbornness. She was the only daughter that was brave enough to leave home and go out on her own and pursue something she wanted without the permission of her father. The Smolinsky family was very poor, they were to the point of which they could not afford to throw away potato peelings, and to the point of which they had to dig through other people?s thrown out ash in order to gather the coal they needed. They could not afford to buy themselves new clothes or new furniture.
Ever take a midnight train to Georgia? No, well ever drive through Georgia? When driving through Georgia on State Road 49, there is a little town called Andersonville that is very easy to miss. To many it is just another town. Yet this town has its own trail. The Andersonville Trail is a small brown dirt road that leads visitors to the Andersonville National Historic Site (Roberts xi). This National Historic Site looks like a “well- tended” national cemetery. One of the most common and prominent themes of The Pearl is greed. One of the first examples of this is when Kino went to the doctor to beg for treatment, but the doctor responded, "‘Has he any money?’ the doctor demanded. ‘No, they never have money. I, I alone in the world am supposed to work for nothing- and I am tired of it. See if he has any money!’” (Steinbeck 11). Many would consider it unethical to refuse treatment to someone simply because of their poverty. The doctor refusing to cure the ill child shows how greed has corrupted him to the point of having an innocent baby die rather than offering up his services for free. Another early instance of greed was when the news of the pearl “came to the priest walking in his garden, and it put a thoughtful look in his eyes and a memory of certain repairs necessary to the church. He wondered what the pearl would be worth” (Steinbeck 21). Even the people of God, those believed to have the highest morals, became materialistic. He who is supposed to be satisfied with just the love of the lord suddenly hungered for more. This greed eventually came to Kino when Juana suggested throwing away the pearl, but Kino replied, “‘No,’ he said. ‘I will fight this thing. I will win over it. We
Atlanta, GA, is one of the most exciting cities in the nation. Not only is it one of the most populated cities, but it has one of the largest metropolitan areas as well. This city is a fantastic option for those making the move to Georgia for a number of reasons. If you are considering a move to Atlanta, here are some things you will want to know.
Having been a gateway to and from southern economics and enterprise before and during the war, Atlanta seemingly sealed its fate by becoming a strategic target for a union offensive. In an effort to cripple the supply line to Confederate forces, General Sherman opted to finish destroying the already war wrenched city. When Union forces finally left Atlanta, it appeared little more then a desolate wasteland. Undoubtedly Sherman had achieved the Unions goal, as well as sending a clear message to the Confederates.
someday. It’s one of the biggest southern states in the USA. I have lived in Atlanta over 5 years, absolutely love it. Did you know Atlanta is the birth place of the Great Martin Luther King Jr? Also, Atlanta is known for the largest Aquarium in the US. Another thing that’s very interesting about Atlanta is that they are known for their Coca Cola Company.
Knoxville, Tennessee, keeps its citizens and visitors busy with many options for shopping and food at places like The Old City and the college strip. The town also makes for a cheap vacation spot with high-energy nightlife.
Throughout the play the reader sees how 'fences' are used to protect the characters mentioned. Early on, Rose protects herself by singing, 'Jesus, be a fence all around me every day. Jesus, I want you to protect me as I travel on my way' (Wilson 21). By Rose signing this song, one can see Rose's desire for protection. To Rose, a fence is a symbol of her love. Her longing for a fence signifies that Rose represents love and nurturing within a safe environment. However Troy and Cory think the fence is a burden and reluctantly work on finishing Rose's project. Bono indicates to Troy that Rose wants the fence built to protect her loved ones as he says, 'Some people build fences to keep people out' and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you? (61). While reminiscing about the 'project', Bono asks Troy why he 'got to go and get some hard wood' (60) as he says, "Nigger, why you got to go and get some hard wood? You ain't doing nothing but building a little old fence. Get you some soft pine wood. That's all you need" (60). Troy choosing to use hard wood instead of soft pine wood shows the reader that Troy wants hard wood to protect him harder from Death and all of his problems. Although each character in the play interprets the concept of a fence differently, they all see it as some form of protection.
Almost immediately we are introduced to the drunken, deranged man who is Huck?s father, Pap. Pap is an alcoholic who roams from place to place buying up booze and sleeping wherever he can. Huck has never viewed him as a real father figure because Pap has almost never been there for Huck, except when he is ?disciplining? him. Pap is uneducated and disapproves of Huck attending school. Pap tells Huck, "you're educated...You think your're better'n your father, now, don't you, because he can't?" (14) Huck puts up with Pap?s numerous beatings because he does not want to be the cause of any more controversies between himself and Pap. Huck explains, "If I never learnt nothing else out of pap, I learnt that the best way to get along with his kind of people is to let them have their own way" (95). Pap?s addiction to alcohol is how Twain views the affect that alcohol can have on a person. He believes that alcohol is a money waster, can affect the sanity of people, and how it can turn even decent men into complete scoundrels.
Kino begins the story a simple man. Accustomed to a daily routine, he feels a sense of responsibility for his family and his people. Though he must work to survive, he seems content with his simple life. Kino’s life is turned on it’s head, however, when his son Coyotito is stung by a black scorpion. Because the town doctor’s fee is too high, he is filled with a sense of despair and anger. Kino’s luck seems to have reversed, however, when he manages to obtain an enormous pearl from the depths of the ocean:
Steinbeck begins his novel by introducing the conflict that puts Kino on his quest. Kino awakens to find his child bitten by a scorpion. After rushing to the doctor’s house, he realizes that he did not have a sufficient amount of money to pay for the doctor’s service. Later that day, the narrator reveals that Kino’s wife, “had not prayed directly for the recovery of the baby she had prayed that they might find a pearl for which to hire the doctor to cure the baby…” Therefore, as Kino was searching, he came upon a pearl that he knew would be enough to save his son. At the end of chapter 2, this is where Kino begins his quest to find a buyer and save his son.
If you were given a million dollars, what would you do? Spend it in a short amount of time? Or save it responsibly for the future? Many would say the latter, confident that they will accomplish that. But for a few, it doesn’t turn out that way. In the book, The Pearl, a family, Kino, Juana and their child, Coyotito, go through various hardships after they have found a pearl, eventually losing everything they had loved. With three examples from the novel, I will explain what the pearl in the book symbolizes.
