Solar Energy: A Brief Explanation about Photovoltaic Systems

Castro (2014) says that “Energy is the ability to do work, or the ability to move or elicit change in matter. In effect, the amount of energy something has refers to its capacity to cause things to happen”. He also states that energy has some important properties: It’s impossible to destroy energy, or create but it is possible to transfer it from an object to another one. One example is our food whose energy is transferred to us when we eat and we transform this energy in movement, heat, sound, electrical nerve impulse transmission etc. Is not only our body that consumes energy, according to Ginley & Cahen (2012) 81% of global energy supply is based on fossil fuels that generates emissions of greenhouse gases. This is where renewable energies appears as an alternative to save the environment. Although according to Ginley & Cahen it’s difficult to say if these sources may be able to replace fossil fuels in the near future since forecasts for 2030 indicate a trend scenario in which oil will keep a stake of 35% of the world energy supply, while coal will account for 22% and natural gas by 25%. The Renewable sources are: hydro, biomass, solar, wind, geothermal - Ginley & Cahen says that they now are 12.7% of world energy supply and could reach no more than 14% of supply in 2030. One of the most used around the renewable source is hydro and this paper will treat this theme.
