Soil Biotechnology (SBT) system of wastewater recycling has been developed by Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB). It is a green engineering approach having several national and international credentials. It is based on a bio-conversion process and is practically maintenance free. It does not produce any kind of odorous biosludge and consumes least energy. The present study focuses on the holistic assessment of SBT plant in Mumbai at Virar and Worli considering its technical, socio-economic and environmental aspects. The technical and socio-economic facet has been analyzed by rigorously surveying the plants and available secondary data. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology has been exerted to evaluate the environmental impacts of the operation phase of SBT. The results show an efficient reduction in the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of the raw waste water. The COD and BOD removal of more than 90 percent can be achieved using this technology. Also the nutrient removal proficiency (Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonical Nitrogen, TKN, Total Nitrogen and Phosphates) of this technique is outstanding. This technology provides several benefits over other conventional technologies for wastewater treatment.

Water is the only renewable resource among all other renewable sources which cannot be replaced by other resources as water is vital for food production, economic development and for life itself, also water is difficult to purify and costly to transport (Kumar C.P., 2003; Mehta P., 2012). This plant is designed to recycle around 3 MLD of sewage. The plant consists of two treatment beds made from specially prepared soil with required mineral additives. Beds are of about 2.5 m in height spread over on area of about 1700 m2 each. The floor and the walls of the containment are water proofed with HDPE sheets with side anchoring. On top of the beds various types of plants are grown and the area looks like a garden. Sewage pumped from the sump is directly sprayed on top of the soil beds through perforated PVC pipes laid in between the rows of plants. Floor of the beds have gentle slope to drain the purified water to side collection tanks. From side tanks the water flows by gravity to holding tank of 1700 m2 area and 2 m deep. Unlike in other known techniques of wastewater purification, in this technique various contaminants are removed at one place.
