Introduction Paper When most think about death and the after life they suddenly become shaken. Is death painful? Is it scary? Is there like after death? Are we truly at peace? What happens to our soul? Those who believe that God is our creator they seem to be less frightened about the idea of death. Socrates on the other hand was never once frightened about the idea of death. Throughout the Apology, one is able to clearly analyze Socrates’ view on death and the soul. The Apology is the actual speech delivered by Socrates during his death trial. In the Athenian jury system, an "apology" is composed of three parts: a speech, followed by a counter-assessment, then some final words. 'Apologia ' in Greek means defense and not regretting anything. The speech was Socrates defending himself at the trial. Socrates argument is that death should be a joyous time, especially for philosophers. Socrates claimed when we die, our souls remain alive and are simply released from the body in which they were being held in on Earth. Thus, Socrates further emphasizes his idea that when someone dies their body is harmed, but their soul leaves the body unharmed and lives on in peace for eternity. I will divide it into three parts: In the first part I will discuss Socrate’s life and background. In the second part I will focus Socrates’ beliefs about death. In the third part I will focus on the idea of the soul. My main questions will be: Why is death such an important idea for Socrates in Philosophy and what is his relationship to death? Throughout the paper I will address important questions like: Should we be afraid of death? Is it considered to be a joyous time? What happens to our soul after life? In Plato’s Apology, Socrates uses religious appeals, proof by contradictions and various examples to argue for his innocence in court. Socrates is forced to argue for the sake of his life to prove that he is not guilty. In Socrates’ speech, however, he is not apologizing for anything instead, the word comes from the Greek word “apologia,” that translates to a speech made in defense. In this paper, I will argue that Socrates’ decision to stay in Athens and to accept suicide was unethical, because he purposefully antagonized the people who control his fate and this ultimately led to the death penalty.
Many readers have their own opinion on whether Socrates accepted his death foolishly or reasonably. This writer’s essay expressed much sympathy and admiration on how Socrates accepted his fate. However, the writer’s argument lacks strong reasons as to why one might consider Socrates’ decision a wise one. We will analyze the writer’s key arguments and determine if they show strong evidence in to persuading the reader of Socrates’ decision to accept his fate. Nevertheless, the writer provides some good points as to Socrates’ good morals. But, fails to convince on specific arguments on whether Socrates decision was wise or foolish.

In Plato’s dialogue, Phaedo, Echecrades asks Phaedo the details of Socrates’ last day alive. Phaedo first describes his own countenance as well as the rest of Socrates’ companions as “an unaccustomed mixture of pleasure and pain” because they all know that Socrates’ death is imminent, however they see that Socrates appears happy and without fear (58, e). The conversation with Socrates turns to why a philosopher should not fear death. Socrates defines death as the separation of the soul from the body (64, c). He states that the body is a constant impediment to a philosopher in their search for the truth. Socrates says that the body “fills us with wants, desires, fears, all sorts of illusions and much nonsense, so that… no thought of any kind ever comes to us from the [it].” (66, c). He claims that philosophy itself is “training for dying” and philosophers purify their souls by detaching it from the body (67, e). Socrates concludes that it would be unreasonable for a philosopher to fear death because they will obtain the truth they sought in life upon the separation of their body and soul, or death (67, c). After successfully proves the soul’s immortality, Socrates goes on to tell his companions a myth. This myth tells o the judgment of the dead and their journey through the underworld (107, d). In the book “Phaedo,” Plato discusses the theory of forms with ideas that concern the morality of the form. There are four philosophers that are expressed which are Phaedo, Cebes, and Simmias regarding the execution of Socrates. Socrates is presented in “Phaedo” on the morning of his execution where he is being killed. He tells his disciples Simmias and Cebes that he is not afraid of dying because a true philosopher should welcome and look forward to death but not suicide. A man should never commit suicide. He says that we are possessions of the Gods and should not harm themselves. He provides the four arguments for his claim that the soul is immortal and that a philosopher spends his whole life preparing for death.

“Apology” is a speech Socrates spoke when he was on trial. The trial took for corruption and impiety took place in 399 BC; he was charged with not recognizing the Greek Gods whom were recognized by state, creating new deities, and corrupting the young of Athens. “Apology” is a defence against said charges of impiety and corruption. During the trial, Socrates parodies, imitates, and corrects the orators, the people who accused him. He asks the jury to judge him by the truth of his statements and not his verbal skill.
Socrates was a philosopher who was true to his word and his death was ultimately felt by his closest friends and followers. In Phaedo, Socrates is met with his closest friends during his final hours as they await his death. At this point Socrates is prepared for death and seems to welcome it. Although death may seem like a scary inevitable fate that we all must face at one point; Socrates saw death as a privilege mainly because he believed that the soul was immortal. As a result, Socrates provides arguments as to why he believed the soul was immortal and even though all his arguments lacked unconvincing evidence, he does bring up good points. In this paper I will talk about Socrates’ most and least convincing arguments on immortality, and explain what Socrates’ problem was with Anaxagoras.
Ancient Greek and Christianity both have different vision of death. Therefore, the idea of death and the afterlife was contrarily shown in the two texts. Death permeates Hamlet from the beginning of the tragedy through the ghost of king Hamlet. Suicide was desirable way to replace suffering the life but it is forbidden by the Christian religion. Also Hamlet explains how the body return to dust at the end and what happen in the afterlife. However, death in apology by Plato was unknown idea thus Socrates does not fear it. Socrates discusses that people should not fear death because we do not know the qualities of death. Even though we do not know what death is, he makes some suggestions for the possibilities after death. He suggests that maybe death is just an endless sleep without dreaming, it is where we can finally come to peace with ourselves. He also suggest that maybe in the afterlife he will be able to meet heroic people in the past, where he can share his experience and question people to see whether they are wise. Even in death Socrates is still going to practice philosophy even if the place is bad. Even if he did not live a just life that he thought he did, he can examine what he did wrong and fix the problems in the after life. I agree with Socrates
