What is Sociology? Sociology is the systematic or scientific study of human society and social behavior. I chose Sociology for my discourse community because I felt out of all my courses, this course fits the six characteristics of discourse community the best. This class is held Tuesday and Thursday in Jennett Lecture hall from 9:30 to 10:45. Dr. Lowney is the professor for this course and has been studying Sociology for over 20 years. When selecting my classes in May, Sociology was a course already selected for me because I am a part of a FLC, or First Year Learning Community. The class consist of 200+ students, who are mostly in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. We are divided into nine different FLCs, all named after a Sociologist. Assignments in Sociology are designed to help the student understand the concept of the course to be able to go into social groups and see how an individual behavior can be influenced by those around. The course has students work together in order to achieve these goals, therefore it has the qualifications to be considered a discourse community.
The goals of Sociology are to have the student learn to demonstrate their knowledge of diversity in individuals and social behavior and understand how an individual’s behavior can be influenced by groups. Students in Sociology 1101 are expected to obtain the knowledge of diversity around different social groups and have a clear understanding of how individual influenced by social forces.

...o with styles of leaders. The course lexis build community between members of this community because it is a way for us all to communicate among each other while being able to understand the goals of the course.
Understanding the course as a discourse community helps me understand how all of my classes could be a discourse community. The assignments we get during lectures and outside of class are helpful tools to get the student to be able explain the concept of the course and see how an individual’s behavior is influenced by their surroundings. Understanding discourse communities can help me throughout college because I feel it will make classes easier when it comes to understanding the goals of the course. If you view a class as a discourse community it will also make it easier to communicate with one other because you may share the same interest in that course.
