Race is an idea that developed and changed over time. Essentially, it is a method of organizing and splitting people into categories. The struggle of race was also concerning which race was superior. When studying American history, the majority of people in power were White. If one was a descendant from another nationality it caused them to be inferior. We have progressed away from these ideologies but unfortunately still encounter racial issues in our nation and all across the world.

For example, this can be compromised of cultural heritage, foods, dress, family names, music, language, and much more. Some of the ethnic groups in the United States include Mexican Americans, Irish, Italian, Jewish, and Norwegian Americans. It is hard to distinguish the difference between race and ethnicity. The conventional approach views race as biological and ethnicity as culture. The 2010 Census tried to clear up the confusion between the two as they stated “For this census, Hispanic origins are not races.” The Census is working hard on making the options for the 2020 Census more inclusive. They are looking into making more options than just “White” or “Black”, like the “Asian” category also includes Chinese or Japanese. A minority group are people who are singled out for unequal treatment and who regard themselves as objects of collective discriminations. Characteristics of a minority group include that their membership is an ascribed status. Another characteristic is they tend to marry within their own group and tend to feel strong group solidarity. Another group is the dominant group. This is the group with the most power, greatest privileges and highest social status. The two psychological theories are the frustration aggression theory and the authoritarian personality. The Frustration Aggression Theory was started by John Dollard and this theory was to help understand people when they perceived that they are being prevented from achieving a goal, their frustration is likely to turn to aggression. The closer you get to a goal, the greater the excitement and expectation of pleasure. Therefore, the closer you get, the more frustrated you get when you are held back from your goal. The study also concluded that the more unexpected of occurrence frustration and likeliness of aggression increase.
