In society today we see many different types of families. How they function, what they believe, and what kind of lifestyles they live. The family a person has can play a major role in who they become later in life. Some people may have not even had a family to learn from and get taught the basic necessities to make it in life. To some people, the dynamics of their family could be completely normal, and to others, it may seem extremely unordinary. People come from many different families, looking into why they are the way they are, why they do what they do, can all lead back to how they were raised and what kind of lifestyle and influence they had. In “Essentials of Sociology” it states “despite the very real problems families face, family relationships continue to be a major source of satisfaction for most Americans throughout their lives.” (306) In most American families, most members are striving to reach the “American Dream.” This would include being financially stable, having nice materialistic things, good relationships within the family, and the list could go on and on. What I have learned over parts of this class, even families living in that dream can still not achieve the happiness they are searching for and could potentially be just as unhappy as families living in poverty. In America, we base a lot off of the things we own and the lives we live, versus the type of family relationships we have. It is a very outward appearance. Depending on what type of family you grew up in, truly has an effect on what type of person you will become. If you grew up with parents with drug and alcohol addictions, you are most likely to obtain some of the same habits. If you spent your childhood watching dad never working and having to live off of barely nothing per week, there is a relatively high chance that you will take the same life skills with
