The sociological perspective plays a significant role in everyday living, although many are unaware of the specific impact this perspective may have on our lives. This perspective studies human behaviors and the way certain society factors impact such behaviors. There are three main sociology perspective groups, the conflict perspective, functionalist, and the symbolic interactionist perspective (Mooney, Knox, and Schacht, 2007). Between my extracurricular activities, education, and workplace, the sociological perspective plays a significant role in my life. Based off of the functionalist perspective from the works of Emile Durkheim, each of the social components contribute to functioning within the community (Mooney et al., 2007). Education is a way to transfer skills and knowledge from the society to the youth of the community. Teachers come to school everyday willing to help many students by changing and influencing their everyday lives. Everyday something different happens at school resulting in various behavior changes as the outcome of the school day. Administration, staff, teachers, and peers can all have an influence on the social interactions throughout the school day and therefore have a tremendous effect on our behaviors. Functionalists use terms such as functional and dysfunctional to describe the various social relationships in everyday life (Mooney et al., 2007). Bullies at school can interfere with learning as well as make students upset and create problems, demonstrating the dysfunctional concept due to the disruption of social interactions. However, school can also help students learn many things for foundational skills outside of school, as well as provide opportunities to make new friends, known as the functional component of this perspective.
