In order to fully understand ourselves within society, we must take a look at the inequalities and differences across our country. C. Wright Mills theorized the sociological imagination, the concept of comparing social relations with that has happened in relation to one another and what happened in our own history. Paulo Freire was concerned about the current education system in America and believed that it is currently similar to a banking system in which authority simply deposits their individual thoughts into those around them. These struggles alongside the conditioning of fulfilling expectations set before them, all guides students to fit the mold of the banking system of education. Students tend to apply to universities that are of the level of difficulty that is expected of them. We are told from the beginning that there are a standard that we should strive to reach for our perceived education level. The top students in the class in high school are expected to apply to Ivy League colleges while the students lower in the class are expected to apply to colleges that are much less selective. When students go to schools in a different education level, for example if a student from the top of a class decides to go to a community college, it becomes a scandal in the community to figure out what is causing them to not reach their full, expectant potential. In society today, it is rare for students to go to college in a level below their ability because of the pressure of the expectations set before them from the education system of America today. College is its own burden in and of itself. Coming into college, I and multiple other students have taken many AP level classes as well as college courses and have the credit from high school. The college that you are able to get into because of these courses then place you with students at the same academic level, causing these seemingly advantageous credits, to get cancelled out. In the essay, “We Send Too Many Students To College” by Marty Nemko, he argues that, contrary to popular belief, college is not for everybody. Nemko states that colleges accept numerous high school graduates every year, when they know that if the student did not do well in high school, they have a very low chance of actually acquiring a degree. However, If someone is fortunate enough to graduate from college and obtained a degree that costed them an exceptional amount of money, it is likely that they will have to settle for a job they could have “landed as a high school dropout”. Colleges are just out for money, and the only way they can get money is by accepting countless students into their “business”, whether the student will prosper from it or not is a different story. The article reports that there is no proof that students actually learn and remember everything they get taught during their college education. In fact, some college seniors failed tests that should be easily and accurately completed, and instead of these institutions getting penalized perhaps, they are “rewarded
The concept of sociological imaginations allows us to get out of our own judgment zone with regards to how we think about social problems. Instead, it allows us to step into the other person’s shoes to see things from their own perspectives. Also, to try as hard as we can to understand why that problem might exist for that individual. C. Wright Mills argument is that we should develop a method or a way of looking at things in the society from the point of view of the person experiencing the sociological phenomenon. In essence, we can’t look at things from our own moral point of view; we need to look at things from the point of view of the person experiencing the issue, the concern, and the problem. Mills believes that the individual cannot understand themselves as individuals; also they can’t understand their role in society without this understanding....
For many college students, college is their first big step into adulthood. Students now need to worry about money, roommates, serious relationships, pursuing their passions, future and present jobs, and above all homework, class, and studying. This is the situation that most college students are thrown into. We simply don't need one more thing to worry about. I believe this is why in 2008, an AP survey found that eighty percent of students say they are stressed daily, thirteen percent have been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder or depression, and nine percent have considered suicide.(Cite 1) This makes colleges that are actively pursuing lowering students grades such as Princeton seem maleficent. Harrell brushes this off in his article as he says that lower grades will increase competition and then makes the incredulously pompous statement: if you wanted to breeze through college you should have gone to Harvard. Harrell says that at Princeton their goal is to “Teach, not to entertain... [to] maximize academics, not leisure.”(CITE0) This mindset is not healthy. A student at a university that puts an emphasis on lowering everyones grades and increasing difficulty fosters a culture that overemphasizes gades. The author, Frank Bruni’s, main argument was that college admissions were being too selective in their process, and that they were looking into the wrong details from the student. He talks about how there will be a report coming out in the very near future from top administrators like Yale, M.I.T. and the University of Michigan, that is called “Turning the Tide”, that will point out the flaws within the admissions process of top schools. The author thinks that, “Focused on certain markers and metrics, the admissions process warps the values of students drawn into a competitive frenzy.” Not only does it bring out unhealthy competitiveness, it gives and unfair chance to kids who come from less fortunate backgrounds. Sociological imagination is the understanding of relationships between self and society. Anything that happens in a person’s life is an effect of something that has happened in society. Understanding sociological imagination will allow people to see how society can shape a person’s life. People feel that their failures are their own fault when in reality it is caused by what happens in society. If Americans understood sociological imagination they would have a better understanding as to why something happens to them, and how to fix that problem. The term Sociological Imagination was coined by C. Wright Mills and refers to seeing sociological situations from a broad point of view, going beyond one’s thoughts and feelings, and by seeing how others would see it. In the textbook Introduction to Sociology by Giddens, et al. Al Mills argued that we needed to “overcome our limited perspective. [and have] a certain quality of mind that makes it possible to understand the larger meaning of our experiences” (4). Therefore, one should look at the overall social problems and not at a specific individual’s situation.
Today in society, people follow these “cultural myths”, which tells us what is and what is not acceptable in life because these morals have been instilled in us since childhood. People created cultural myths as a set of social norms they expected people to follow. In Kenneth A. Gould’s and Tammy L. Lewis’s article, The Sociological Imagination, they talk about society and the way or how it affects us. It examines the relationship between an individual and society. Everything we do and how we do it is affected by society and others around us. Everything that happens with society in turn affects us and those around us. The way we live and we respond to society can have a major impact on the rest of the world.
Social theories provide us with a new perspective in the social world. With new perspectives, new opinions can be made. also, they can provide answers or explain a specific social spectacle. Social theories can help clarify and predict the way the social world works. The three major sociological perspectives are functionalism, the conflict theory, and the symbolic interaction theory. Each theory is different and can help answer many questions about human behavior in a social world.
The Sociological Imagination The human attitudes have always been a curiosity that captivated most of the great social theorists like Karl Marx, Engels and Durkheim. One of the most unhumble attitude of the humanity was Racism and stereotyping. The racial issue even in the 21st century continue to be a subject that still is present and significant even though we tend to say that racism and other forms of discrimination are prohibited by law and illegal still even in the US the country of all freedoms people face everyday racism, discrimination and humiliation The Sociological imagination, a concept brought by C. Wright Mills basically states that a person lives out a biography and lives it out with some historical sequence. That means that everyone lives his personal life and personal experience but at the same time he contributes to change the history or to affect the society and that creates the historical sequence.

When we see these statistics all around our societies, in such masses, it makes using common sense assumptions or subjective claims to give valid reasons or explanations for such large scale differences in society’s educational achievement impossible. If we instead use (Mills 1959) sociological imagination, we can construct a far better argument for explanation built on research and reliable findings to answer questions not only about our education system but ourselves in our society from our past, present and possibly to begin to predict or understand our future structure and place in society.
Everybody; old and young have active an imagination, but we all express it differently than others. For me I express my imagination with my artwork. For example; when I was younger I watched a lot of cartoons just like any other kid. My favorite cartoon at the time was He-Man. I loved the show so much that I frequently dreamt and imagined of being strong like him, but I knew it could not be possible so instead of dreaming, I drew up an entire comic book of myself being a super strong super hero just like He-Man all thanks to my vivid imagination and artistic ability. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has done something similar.
