Sociological Imagination is the basis for this entire paper. In order to better understand the larger concept, it is needed to go in depth on the subject. There are two main parts that make up sociological imagination, agency and structure. Agency according to Chambliss and Eglitis is “the ability of individuals and groups to exercise free will and to make social changes on a small or large scale” (p. 7). Structure defined by Chambliss and Eglitis is “patterned social arrangements that have effects on agency” (p. 7). The relationship between structure and agency can be viewed with the example of a class structure. The structure of how the 1900s society was made up, it was out of the norm for a woman to do that, it was also taboo, and there were various legal constraints on her. Such like the ability for her to enter higher education was not allowed in that time frame. That is a prime example of how structure can affect the agency of a society. Thus the broader term of sociological imagination is brought up. Sociological imagination according to Chambliss and Eglitis is “the ability to grasp the relationship between individual lives and the larger social forces that help to shape them” (p. 5). What is appropriate in society can be altered in multiple ways, by what that social group does, the influence over others that it has, and what is deemed allowed. Another example of sociological imagination is a couple getting a divorce. The sole reasons are not just that the husband is focusing too much on his work and neglecting his family, nor is it that the wife feels like she is trapped in an unhappy marriage. With the first stage in my life when I first had to deal with multiple responsibilities as a freshman in high school. I look at what I had on my plate as far as tasks to do versus other teenageers at the time and I can make the following connections. At the time I feel as though my life would have been somewhere in the middle as far as busy schedule and lack of time. I was taking high school classes like every other teen would have taken. The high school I was attending was a private school, which means that not everyone that would have liked to attend could because of the costs. However I believe that the level of education that was provided at it was about the same as a public school. On top of that I was in extracurricular activities that not all kids would have to be in. However I did not have a job on top of that, which I remember some of my friends having at that time. At the time for my individual life I thought I was very busy, however looking back on my short life. I was not busy at all, and I had much free time available to do what I pleased. I think as far as social factors that played in that time frame of my life, it fit within society 's norms. I am unsure how to define what generation of immigrant I am. I was born in London in the UK and then moved to the US when I was 7 years old. This would make me a first generation immigrant, however, I was born a US citizen. My mom is from the US and my dad is from the UK. My mom moved to the UK after marrying her first husband, who was British. They got divorced but she decided to stay in England and at that time she met my dad. My dad had another son from his first marriage and then my younger brother and me were both born in the UK. As a result, my younger brother and I have been dual citizens since birth.
The term Sociological Imagination was coined by C. Wright Mills and refers to seeing sociological situations from a broad point of view, going beyond one’s thoughts and feelings, and by seeing it how others would see it. In the textbook Introduction to Sociology by Giddens, et. al Mills argued that we needed to “overcome our limited perspective…[and have] a certain quality of mind that makes it possible to understand the larger meaning of our experiences” (4). Some sociologists believe that humans have the freedom to make their own choices and decide how they behave (agency) while others theorize that human behavior is determined and influenced by the patterns, arrangements, norms and guidelines of society (structure). The third position doesn’t choose either or but rather states that the two; structure and agency equally play a role in shaping human behaviour and attitudes; this perspective is known as structuration; developed by Giddens (as sited in Huyssteen, 2003).

Everybody; old and young have active an imagination, but we all express it differently than others. For me I express my imagination with my artwork. For example; when I was younger I watched a lot of cartoons just like any other kid. My favorite cartoon at the time was He-Man. I loved the show so much that I frequently dreamt and imagined of being strong like him, but I knew it could not be possible so instead of dreaming, I drew up an entire comic book of myself being a super strong super hero just like He-Man all thanks to my vivid imagination and artistic ability. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has done something similar.
