2. History of the group in the United States

Before 1500, Africans were spread in tribes across the African continent. Europeans in the Americas had an abundance of resources but no labor to cultivate it all so they looked to West Africa for workers, establishing a direct trade route in 1518 (Kelley & Lewis, 2000). The first noted slaves in the United States were brought to the Virginia colony in 1619, then slowly spread to other areas (Brawley, 2001). At first, Africans were regarded as indentured servants rather than slaves, working in exchange for their transportation to America (Barr, 2004). Some estimates state that ten to twenty million Africans were enslaved and forced to migrate to the colonies in North America to be sold as a commodity. Once they were transported, they all became known as “African Americans” rather than by their specific ethnic identities (Kelley & Lewis, 2000).
