A social worker is someone who has a sort of passion or drive for helping people. Not just anyone can take on this career; the job demands a special type of person with certain qualities fit for situations that will be thrown at hand. The field of social work can go into so many dimensions, such as clinical social workers, case managers, and even administrative positions in agency settings. Social workers work with a broad spectrum of individuals- whether it is the elderly, children, the homeless, immigrants, drug/alcohol abusers, or people with learning and physical disabilities. This decision will turn young Dreamers’ lives upside down and they will need the help of social workers to find there place once again. The primary goal for social workers under the code of ethics is to help people in need and to address social problems (NASW, 2008). Service delivery will be more challenging when dealing with illegal immigrant clientele than ever before. A social worker will no longer be able to connect their client with the resources DACA provided. These people are now in a more vulnerable position because they have access to less guidance than before. The people established to help them, social workers, are now legally required to turn them in. This surfaces yet another confliction when referencing the code. Dreamers were once members of the community: going to school, serving in the military, and holding legit jobs. If DACA is rescinded, the title Dreamers hold will be flip-flopped. No longer Dreamers, but illegal immigrants once again, with no protection. This change in identity could cause the dignity and worth of the person to crumble. Being newly branded as a criminal instead of a contributing member of society could influence the path they are on. With no policy in place to assist them in establishing a legitimate livelihood, Dreamers may turn to illegal sources of income. This essay aims to explore the characteristics that make a good quality social work assessment in child care. Martin (2010) stated that there was “no single agreed definition of social work assessment.” Coulshed and Orme (2006, p24) did not offer a formal definition but they described assessment as “…a basis for planning what needs to be done to maintain, improve or bring about change in the person, the environment or both.” According to the Maclean and Harrison (2015) good assessments must be “purposeful and timely.” This is because practitioners need to be clear about why they are carrying out assessments and what it is they wish to achieve at the end of that assessment.

Many people don’t know that social workers deal with more mental health than any psychologist, psychiatrist and psychiatric nurses combined. Interesting right? I would definitely have thought otherwise. Social work is a very unique field that is overlooked and should have quite a bit more appreciation than it does. Making it in the real world is tough but thanks to social work peoples civil rights are protected, people with mental illnesses are now able to afford humane treatment and society is more in tune with preventing child abuse and neglect. To be successful in the field of social work you have to care about what you are doing, have ethics, and have empathy… social work is not all about the money.
Social work as a profession strives to help the welfare of those within the community whether its persons or families through advocacy. Often times clients are those who may be vulnerable and disadvantaged. Social workers aim to help people fulfill basic needs in their everyday lives and assist them by providing beneficial resources and intervention counseling. They do more than just help them in their current situation, it’s about helping them to survive and set attainable goals to live a fuller and better life for themselves, and most time for their families.
What does it mean to become a social worker? Why was I committing two years of my life to school after renouncing further education? I asked myself this after I applied, waited anxiously for my acceptance letter and scrambled to figure out the finances after I was accepted. I could not have guessed that the first day of the Micro Human Behavior Social Environment (SWG 510) would capture my attention and thrust me into the professional world of Social Work. As I learned more about what it meant to become a social worker, I found myself aligning to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Ethical Standards as reviewed through Foundation Course I’s first chapters.
There are many reasons why I would love to become a social worker. However, it is sort of difficult to pinch point how or why I became attracted to this specific profession. Nevertheless, most of the particles in my body argue that it would have to stem back to experiences I have encountered growing up. I would like to begin by saying that graduating high school I was unsure where I was going or where I would end up. My mother who always had high expectations for me persuaded me to at least attempt pursing a college education. I then decided to enroll Guttman Community College @ CUNY, where I was appointed a Student Success Advocate (S.S.A). My S.S.A saw something in me that I had yet to figure out. He pushed me to want more for myself both in my academic and personal life. Every time I was ready to give up he was there to remind me that I was capable of succeeding.
Research is a necessity when it comes to providing services. Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. It provides social service agents with ways to identify problems within their clients, communities, organizations, and the government. Also it helps them to create ways to aid in effective change. Social work practices involves facilitating change—in other words, working with others, not doing something to them or for them(Dubois). Most people and social workers would always use the world ‘help’ in some way or form when defining social workers.
