The NASW thought that it was necessary to implement a mission statement that would encompass the profession of social work and to individuals around the world. The mission statement is as follows: “The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” (NASW, 2017). Therefore, this mission statement has left its historic meaning in the profession’s lens on the individual’s well-being and the well-being of society. The mission that is practiced through the NASW means to this writer that as social workers we should help our clients obtain competency. One way that we can accomplish this is by, helping individuals strive to develop skills that will increase their knowledge. Another important aspect to following the NASW Code of Ethics that is important is, believing the ethics that are outlined for themselves and their clients. One technique that this can be put into practice is a therapist putting themselves in their client’s “shoes” to fully understand the problems that they are going through.
