Social Work and Social Welfare are crucial to today 's society without social workers along with the help of social welfare programs, many necessities of america could not be met. this year over 6 million children will be reported as being abused. Each and every day the innocence of an adolescent is marred. whether that be physically, sexually, emotionally or even just being neglected. which brings america to the clear assumption that social workers are a necessity to promote safety to the children of America. As much as we want to close our eyes everyday and pretend this isn 't happening, the statistics are not a hidden phenomena. eighty percent of reported abuse show the parents as the perpetrators, and the truth in that percentage is …show more content…
how can we even consider ignoring such monumental numbers? many may see these statistics as something that always has been and always will be however there are few beyond ourselves that commit themselves everyday to the gruesome conditions, they call themselves social workers. Many convulse at the thought of such people being necessary, those being ones who haven 't witnessed the marvels themselves. An alcoholic speaks of his life and the lessons he has acquired, an addict can proclaim his testimony and the therapy that helped turn his life around and in the same way that those are important more than one child can tell of the ways social workers have impacted their life. many responsibilities come with the career choice of a social worker. one would not prosper without the ability to work easily with other people and the compassionate nature needed to succeed. there are many pros and cons to going into this field. During different cases the social worker of the case may receive much of the blame from the media of things completely out of the workers control. many people who grow up seeing themselves as a “people person” go into this field believing they will simply …show more content…
this argument can consequently be seen as irrelevant because such theories have been tried in the past and failed miserably. social workers set goals to overcome the injustice going on around us everyday and they make his visible through their qualities of integrity, competence, and worth. a large amount of people disagreeing with many of social welfare programs disagree due to their beliefs that those on welfare accept a “get out of jail free” card and are able to live life leisurely while the “higher income” are working hard. however, this is far-distanced from the truth in fact, most participating in welfare programs are either employed or seeking welfare. The upper strata wonders, “Why should we pay... when we get little or none of the benefits?” Even worse, this social stratification leads those at the top to begin imposing a virtue and vice story. Those at the top did it all by themselves, those at the bottom, on the other hand, are essentially burning down their own houses just to collect the fire insurance” lies as such are what begin everyday to change the minds of americans this idea proposes that the welfare programs are to blame for poverty, the welfare programs are
The basis of this assignment was to create a further and more in depth understanding of my chosen field, social work. Social workers aid and support individuals, groups, and communities through difficult times and ensure that vulnerable people are safeguarded from harm. Without them our nation would not have the proper support to establish order and relations in society. I explored the numerous types of social working jobs, ranging from Child, Family, and School social workers, Mental Health and Substance Abuse social workers, to social workers in Administration, Policy, and Research. I provided all of the educational requirements necessary to become a social worker, along with the benefits of acquiring a higher degree. In addition, I included the average salary of an entry level social worker and the average salary for a social worker with a Master’s degree or other professional licensure. I provided all essential information one would need to know before entering the field of social work. For example, what the job requires beyond what you can learn in a classroom. Patience, understanding and empathy are a few of the many imperative personality traits a social work must possess. Along with the facts and statistics I incorporated into my paper, I also included a personal section explaining why I chose to enter this field.
Social workers are viewed by the world to be “fixers” in society. The general public sees social workers as just “people who work in child protective services”, they do not know about the other things that social workers are also involved in. I interviewed, Stuart Brewster, a therapist for children and families, he graduated from the university of Washington with a masters degree in social work.
A Child Protective Service worker is a career that can be mentally and physically exhausting with emotional upheaval and wonderfully rewarding all at the same time. This paper discusses several “best practices’, their descriptions, and how they are put in use to assist the children who need help and the parents who unwillingly become a part of the Child Welfare system; even though they count on the system to help them better themselves and the lives of their children. Child Protective Service workers require extensive training, vast knowledge, multiple values, and strong ethics to effectively assist this
Life in the United States has been difficult for many children. Statistically speaking, there are four children who are killed by abuse each day (Allyn & Bacon, 2011). With numbers increasing over the years change is something that is starting to take place. There are many things that will affect the child welfare system in the future, such as the economic policies, political views, and the current policies set in place (child welfare information). The reason for the child welfare system is to help the children who are getting abused. In the past, there was not a policy set in place; however, this is beginning to change. One of the systems that have been set in place is the Children’s Bureau, an organization that does studies on the mental health of abused children (Thomas, 2012). Although this organization has no authority to develop federal regulations, they are one of the largest agency leaders in child welfare (Thomas, 2012). There are many problems with the economy and government that make it hard to maintain the child welfare system.
In the world, there are 7 billion individuals, 7 billion minds, 7 billion souls and 7 billion hearts and then there’s me. I am one out of 7 billion individuals that want to pursue the fascinating field of social work. When I was a child I wanted to be a lawyer, model, actress, doctor and so many other professions, I changed my mind quite often as most children do. One thing I was certain of was that I’m a people person. I thrive on helping others and it gives me a sense of satisfaction. Throughout this essay, I will discuss why I am a good “fit” for social work, the strengths I possess, and some of the most pressing social problems facing our country today.
The job of a child welfare worker appears to be a demanding profession that promotes the child’s safety, but also strengthens the family organization around them in order to successfully raise the children. This child welfare workers work in the system known as the Child Protective Services whose initiative is to protect the overall welfare of the child. The short novel From the Eye of the Storm: the Experiences of a Child Welfare Worker by Cynthia Crosson-Tower demonstrates the skills necessary to deal with the practice of social work along with both its challenges and its happy moments. The novel consists of some of the cases involving Tower’s actual career in social work. In reading the book, I was able to experience some of the actual cases in which children dealt with physical and mental abuse from their families that caused them to end up within the system. Also, some of these children had issues in adapting to foster and adoptive families based on the issues they faced earlier in life. As we have learned earlier in the course, the violence that a child experiences early in life has an overall affect on the person they become as they grow into adulthood. When children deal with adverse childhood experiences, they are at a higher risk for abusing drugs and/or alcohol, increased likelihood of abusing their own child or spouse, higher rates of violent and nonviolent criminal behavior, along with several other issues throughout their lifespan.
Kris became a social worker because she has a passion and needs to help people. Her passion comes from years of abuse and neglect when she was younger. She stated, “It feels right to be a social worker. Although there is no thank you cards and the work may be meticulous at times, seeing smiles is a great reward”. I have learned most social workers enter this career due to personal experiences and they were to help make a change. I am one of them. Although I know I cannot change the world, I know I can make a difference in the lives I touch. I too will find the smiles of my clients
By promoting programs that aim to educate and counsel new parents on the hardships of parenthood and how to go about tackling them in a healthy way, we can start to reduce the high reports of abuse occurring. Social workers can also promote programs aimed towards children who have already fallen victim to abuse at a young age. Early intervention therapy works towards ensuring that these children grow up to have a safer future and helps to end the detrimental cycle of abuse. The cycle of abuse not only has to end with those have been abused but the offenders who have been doing the abusing. Social workers can also aid in educating and providing counseling to the offenders on trying to understand the underlying issues as to why they partake in such abominable behavior. The more public awareness we bring to the issue and how many it affects, the greater chance we have as a society to put it to an end. National programs such as the expansion of Early Head Start and the promotion of preventing child maltreatment by Obama speaks volumes and is paving the way in igniting change and bringing
...l accountability than other professionals, and especially true because they always come in to people’s lives at a time of crisis. Some people have a lifelong association with Social Workers, and there is not always a cure at the end of it. (Trinder, 2000)
For years, when I thought of Social Workers, I imagined a person coming into a client’s home and taking their kids away for neglect. Later, I found out that social workers could go into so many dimensions, such as clinical social workers, case mangers, and even administrative positions in agency settings. Furthermore, I realized that I was maturing into an adult. For example, when I began telling people of my decisions to become a social worker, a lot ...
Strengths and Limitations of Social Work Practice in Colombia: A View from Canadian Social Work
The social work profession is defined as “a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people (ISFW, ‘Global Definition of Social Work’, 2016).” The definition may be true about the profession but it is more in depth than just that. To me, the profession’s primary focus is to help others through life as much as we can while letting them make their own choices and guiding them. In society, social workers are utilized in many different nonprofit and government roles. They serve the community in many different ways from monitoring parent visits to helping people through mental illnesses. Human beings are so complex and things that happen
The work of a social worker is complex and all encompassing. Social workers work in many capacities seeking justice, liberation, and equality. There work is global, as they work to put policies in place to govern practices. To keep up with societal shifts and generational changes there learning is continuous. As new questions rise so does the need for the continuation of research, not only to answer these questions but to implement into
The first occupation I researched was Social Work. Social Workers work with people to help them deal with and figure out solutions to their problems. Some social workers are able to diagnose people with mental, behavioral, and emotional issues and treat them for them. The nature of a Social Workers activities include assessing clients, developing plans, help adjust clients to change, help them research and find government help, respond to crisis, be an advocate, check on clients to make sure they are doing well, and evaluate the services someone used. There are different types of Social Workers. Clinical Social Workers can diagnose and treat patients. School Social Workers help students with behavioral issues, constant absences, and also help
Social work is a profession which promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and enhance well-being.
