The social network on college students has become a basic need for students. It is a daily routine for students to access sites such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Myspace, and Academia among other sites as they search for information, have fun and connect with other students. The sites have made the world a global village with the availability of the internet everywhere. However, despite the outburst and large numbers of students using social networking, they have positive and negative effects. This paper tries to analyze the argument that social networking has impacted more positively than negatively on students. Smartphones market has been benefiting and firms in the market obtaining huge profits due to the increased demand. The phone companies such as Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Nokia, and Blackberry among others have been preferred due to their fast and easy accessibility to the internet. Students share photos, music, videos and information that may either be educative or social. The access to social media has been providing information at a fast rate as people are ready to share this information once they obtain through updating their walls for the case of Social networks can have a negative effect on a student’s grades. When they are trying to complete their homework’s and assignments, it provides the opportunity and a platform for them to procrastinate. Students instead of studying, they use social media while in studying, doing homework and sometimes in class. These provide distraction to them as the multitasking provides divided attention. It makes students productivity reduces; they go to an extent of disclosing their homework to one another, and interchanging course works material that is considered academic misconduct when it is not allowed.
