In the past several years, the use of technology for social purposes has become the mainstream form of communication for many young Americans. Adolescents, particularly those in high school, have embraced these forms of communication as their primary way to connect with family and friends and showcase their social lives. While the use of social media promotes increased interaction with friends and family, facilitate social and political change, and spread useful information rapidly, the growing use of social media comes with many negatives consequences when abused. In his book, The Dumbest Generation, Mark Bauerlein reveals how the youths of America are being dumbed down due to their reluctance towards reading anything of substance and their
Today’s generation in America is widely affected by social media, but the real question that millions want the answer to is what is the real impact? “76% of American adults online use social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, as of July 2015, up from 26% in 2008. On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more. ” Social media has been the cause of countless problems, but also the solution to numerous issues which is why it is so hard to decide if it is more helpful than it is a burden or vise versa.
With the new digital age, young adults are now more than ever able to meet new people from all over the world. Also, technology has been able to bring these young adults closer to people’s lives, through the use of social media. In the
Social media is ruining people’s social skills because they are becoming more comfortable with talking to someone through a social site than they are with talking face to face. “The study… found that even when there is an opportunity to see people face-to-face, on weekends for example, up to 11% of adults still prefer to stay at home and communicate on their devices instead” (Fowlkes). This is not a good habit to develop because it will affect people’s daily lives, such as when they are trying to meet and impress someone or when they are at a job
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). As you can see, in a society where interacting and over-sharing online is a trend, you probably speak to friends and family through electronic devices and social media than face-to-face. Many surveys have been addressed that one in four college students and adults would spend more time socializing online than they do in person. Whenever you attend a classroom, party or club, you can see that there is someone with their head down looking at the phone, ignore the group and reject to speak in a conversation. Moreover, if they have free time in the weekend to hang out, they tend to want to stay at home and chat or text through social media. As a result, the relationships is deteriorating,

The pressure and strain social media can place on our youth is an enduring force which leads individuals to question themselves as a person and feel inclined to fit a norm expressed in media and social media of our society. The underlying force social media can play in the lives of the youth is astonishing and is a force that must be dealt with and controlled, for it not only holds the power to give an individual strength, but also to break them down.
Did you remember to tell your cousin happy birthday on Facebook? Do you know how many people liked your latest picture on instagram?
