Moreover, businesses and students have also benefited from the use of social media for communication purposes as well as for businesses. It is a well-known fact that social networking came into existence because of technology. On its part, technology has been known to cause various kinds of crime. Even though majority of users of these sites use them for principled and healthy reasons, another group of individuals normally use it for the abuse and exploitation of others especially children and teenagers who largely are normally unsuspecting. The Internet took only four years to attract 50 million participants, and Facebook reached 50 million participants in only one-and-a-half years. Facebook, which was originally designed for Harvard students and launched in 2004, has become a phenomenal example of social engagement. By 2009, Facebook had already achieved 100 million monthly active users covering age groups from 13 to 65; by the end of 2010, there were more than 500 million users. (p. 46) With so many people connected through social media and since businesses are dependent on people to thrive, they have been impacted both positively and negatively.
Social media sites are now finding their way into workplace. Now, social media sites are not just a place where you post photos of your pets wearing cowboy hats. Human Resource professionals now see Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook as an avenue for finding and recruiting promising potential employees. A survey carried out by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) revealed that 77% of firms use social media when selecting candidates for positions. (Global HR Research, 2015). However, weighing the benefits and risk of using social media in hiring decision making is a significant risk that professionals advice should be considered when designing a recruitment strategy. According to a research from the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) and ACAS, approximately half (45%) of human resource decision-makers now make use of social media tools when recruiting; with a further 16% planning to do so in the future (ACAS, 2013).
Staying ahead, and general knowledge of something as new as social media can be a huge advantage. When either a person or a company happens to be a step or two ahead of everyone else on the latest social bandwagon it can bring great success.
“I didn't know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time –Betty White (“Betty White Quotes,” 2014, para. 1).” This quote can be interpreted to fit with several of the social media avenues that many people spend their time on. Day in and day out people post, tweet, share, and pin countless times throughout the world. These different forms of communication were first created for an easier way for people to connect with others. Yet now, so much time is spent on these social sites that it has warped the interactive part and is causing more damage than good. Many are growing a desire and are living for the amount of “likes” they can receive on a post or how many re-tweets they can generate. Instead of going to these outlets to participate in a partial portion of their social lives, people are filling that time with the technological aspect of communication. As White said, this can become an inordinate amount of wasted time and can ultimately grow into further damaging circumstances. These different social media channels can cause emotional harm through disparaging the relationship between friends, conjuring of a narcissistic personality, and the retrogradation of ones self-esteem.
When you think about social media what do you think of. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Vine. Well social media is more than that. Social media is not just Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Social media is any online website that lets you interact with other people, share photo and information and keeps you updated. Or do you think about how it’s made a positive or negative impact on today’s society. In my personal opinion I think social media has made both positive and negatives impacts on today’s society .Some of the negative impacts are cyberbullying and addiction, and the positive impacts are spreading the word and increasing business sales.

Social Networking sites play an essential role in today’s culture as they provide people with the ability to interact, blog, share pictures and videos, flirt, and date without having to move an inch. People pour their minds and hearts into the world of cyber communication; it is an easier way for them to clear their heads without having a face-to-face confrontation. Undoubtedly, this is advantageous to certain people. It helps establish connections with people, friends and family from any corner of the world, but one cannot ignore the extensive privacy breach that occurs in the universe of online social media.
Social networking has increasingly had a huge impact on society. In contrast, Sherry Turkle’s essay “Connectivity and Its Discontents” asserts that technology has a negative effect on interpersonal relationships. Although Pinker makes many excellent points on how technology is improving intelligence and Turkle provides exceptional ideas of how technology is damaging to relationships, neither Pinker nor Turkle provides the best answer to this question due to their lack of credibility and inclusion of logical fallacies. Instead, we should, while aware of the risks and dangers of social networking, use the Internet to its full potential.
One out of every five youths online is approached by an online sexual predator, with the integration of social networking; these numbers are alarmingly on the rise (Guo). In present day, it is nearly impossible to find someone who doesn’t at the very least know of social networks, so it is crucial that the general public know about the many negative effects these networks bring. It’s even more imperative that the public know that any existing or rising social networks are not to be trusted. Social networking could be considered negative for society as it provides sexual predators with opportunities, is a source for unhealthy addiction, and disconnects users from the real world.

These issues are remarkably hazardous in terms of today’s youth overall well-being. In order to protect this generation, and generations to come, one must take a stand and restrict social networking usage, or abolish the idea altogether. Social networking horror stories are increasing everyday, and it is time to put a stop to the reign of the social networks.

All in all, the popularity of social networking sites depends on the copycat effect among people, convenience in themselves, and their good functions. When social networking sites are becoming an important part of people’s lives, people should learn to make the most of these sites instead of wasting time.
In our day to day lives we socialize and interact with many different types of people, including family, friends, colleagues, or even complete strangers. Before technology people stayed in contact via regular mail, writing letters, telephone calls and face to face communication. Today the way in which we relate to others is completely different.
