From the city streets, to the office, the gym, and even the car, there is no escaping the broadcasting of any kind of social media outlet. The never-ending stream of videos, photos, music, articles, interviews, podcasts, tweets, and Facebook statuses seem to dictate the majority of our daily lives, without us even noticing the influence. Thus, it would stand to reason that those users of social media in America understand, the impact it has on their lives. Often, people become accustomed to a system that they overlook what is actually going on behind-the-scenes, let alone attempt to comprehend the detailed impacts of those inner-workings. Therefore, it stands to reason that concerns for where America’s money is going have been more prominent since the crisis, with eyes closely watching the social networking industry. For starters, gross and net earnings of a company help indicate precisely how much these networking giants make in a given year, quarter, or even day. One of the most popular social networking sites, not just in the U.S., but around the world, is Facebook. According to an article published in International Business Times (IBT for short), Facebook, “[…] reported its fiscal 2013 fourth-quarter and full-year earnings Wednesday after markets closed. The Menlo Park, Calif.-based social network reported earnings-per-share of 31 cents on $2.59 billion in revenue, beating Wall Street expectations of 27 cents EPS on $2.32 billion in revenue,” (Neal, 2015). Not only this, but, “Facebook’s revenue increased 63 percent from the fourth quarter of 2012. […] For the entire year, Facebook reported 60 cents EPS on $7.87 billion revenue, up from 20 cents per share on $5.09 billion of revenue, a 55 percent increase year over year. The social network 's net income in 2013 was $1.5 billion,” (Neal, 2015). These statistics are nothing short of astonishing. Essentially, Facebook has been so profitable to the point that in less than one year, its earnings had increased, as aforementioned, a staggering sixty-three percent, a statistic that blew even Wall Street’s predictions. Bearing in mind this is only one social networking site of hundreds readily available, these numbers paint a clear picture of just how much money these companies are earning.
