Social media is defined by Meriam-Webster as “forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content” (Merriam-Webster). That definition does not capture the essence of what social media has become to each person individually. It is as if social media has become an extension of the person itself, when referring to the popular sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. It is used for self-expression, networking, and sharing experiences.
One major benefit of social media, that I have personally experienced, is that it can be used to connect me to people over large distances. I participate in a few social media sites. Some with more regularity than others. The two that I use most frequently are Facebook and Instagram. I use each of them to express myself but in very different ways. As Davidson explains in her essay “Indisputably, the imagination is engaged in making connections in all of those forms, as it is in anything we experience. It is engaged in a different way when we ourselves are making the connections when we’re browsing from one to another link that interests us and draws our attention” (55). Social media made it easier for people to satisfy their need for communication with others. As social beings, humans like to connect with each other; it is how they develop empathy towards others. As Fredrickson explains in her essay “As you interact with one person after another, they gently nudge you to attend to these others more closely and forge connections when possible. They shape your motives and behaviors in subtle ways, yet ultimately, their actions serve to strengthen your relationships and knit you closer to the social fabric of life” (110). From the perspective of adolescents and teenagers growing up in such a hyper-connected world, having a smartphone just seems like a necessity, something that all parents feel obliged to giving to their child at a young age, should they have to contact them in case of emergency. But when can an item such as a smartphone turn into a device that sucks away confidence, self pride and the overall well-being of a child? A device that is making a child fear when it should be used in order to help them feel safe.
