Introduction. In the word today the use social media and smart phone are on the rise in the healthcare setting, social media is no longer an alternative tool in the healthcare, as it allows the nurse and all the health care group share information, ideas and professional experiences through online communication, social media provides a number of benefits including the marketing of brands like the major health care brands do. In fact, most businesses and professional organizations currently taking benefits of using the use social media for their marketing, which will connect with their consumers. Social media as help to promote good health care delivery. Social media platforms include such electronic communication outlets as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Other widely used means of instantaneous communications include wikis, blogs, tweeting, gaming environment, Myspace, Instagram, Skype, and the “hangout” on Google+(McGonigle & Mastrian, 2014). Nurses can positively use electronic media to …show more content…
Some of this danger is already mention in the above scenario. Social media could cause problem that may destroy professional image of the person or institution. As seen in the scenarios, the nurse posts the patient photograph on the social media which is unprofessional, this act will result in the destruction of the institutions (Ventola, 2014). Security is also one of the disadvantages of smartphones/social media, whereby any one can easily access one information on the smartphone. One of the most major disadvantages is the breach of patient privacy which can interfere with ethical and legal behavior of nurses leading to the violation of patient privacy governed by HIPAA, violation may lead to legal implication and action may be taken. Therefore, nurses and health care professional need to be very careful whenever they are using smartphones/social
Everyone is now using social media for their personal use and to communicate in many ways. Social media is a way for businesses and health care professionals to include social networking to educate, promote, improve or enhance the work place. According to the article by C. Lee Ventola (2014). Social media refers to “Internet-based tools that allow individuals and communities to gather and communicate: to share information, ideas, personal messages, images, and other content: and, in some cases to collaborate with other users in real time”.
Privacy and confidentiality are essential rights of the public society. Shielding those rights, with respect to an individual’s personal health information, is the nurses ethical and legal obligation as health care providers. As new demands of advanced technology use in health are is increasing, it is very significant for nurses to maintain the privacy and confidentially as the professional connection of their patients and colleagues are dependent on it (Gorea RK, Gorea A, Gorea A, 2016)
Social media is where most of the families are now able to get a jump start on research by looking at the Internet, but also viewing marketing materials, like virtual tours, provided by the acute care provider. In today’s technological field, the greatest growth for the healthcare and biotechnology are happening here due to the marketing strategies such as social media, mobile/tablet apps and digital sales materials. Hospital providers are also shifting to digital channels to market to healthcare consumers. Overall, it is a no cash investment to reach a targeted market.
As I mention in a privacy post privacy and security of patients records is the main reason social media can be an issue in Healthcare facilities. The breach of patients privacy and security are some of the major negative affect that technology has already has on healthcare. Their is a greater possibility that patients information can be hacked or be exposed easily by people (healthcare workers/providers) through technology (social media)
Social media have provided opportunities to nurses to actively participate in events with the comfort of a home. Gone are the days when meetings were held in large assembly rooms and preparations were needed to accommodate large number of people. In voluntary organizations’ meetings people were compelled to participate in a face to face meeting after a much debated place to hold the meeting. Now participants do not need to worry to go to faraway places to attend a meeting, group discussion, class, seminar and many other events. Due to technological boom availability of the internet has increased many folds. In addition to personal computers, laptops, televisions and tablets it has even embraced mobile phones and transformed these into smart phones.

There are ways to avoid problems when using social media. Before posting something on social media, first “Nurses must consult employer policies or an appropriate leader within the organization for guidance regarding work-related postings” (Spector 1). This helps the nurses distinguish if they are overstepping the Standards of Professional Performance - Standard 7 Ethics and the Code of Ethics for Nurses - Provision Three. Furthermore, asking a leader within nursing, allows the nurses to learn from previous nurse’s mistake when using social media. Another way to avoid social media mistakes as a registered nurse is to “Remember that standards of professionalism are the same online as in any other circumstance” (McCartney 1). To avoid mistake always remember when posting something online, it must also be acceptable in the work place. And if it is not acceptable in the work place than it should not be online at all. Another, recommendation to avoid problems, is that at no point in time is it okay to take photos or videos of patient with personal devices. When posting something about work, do not put a patient’s name or post information that may lead to the identification of a patient. For example, when a nurses post something about how stressful their day was because of a patient, the nurses should restrain herself or himself from reviling
Technology continues to progress. Today, every business, school and organization thrive mostly because of a well-developed website or an application that is easily downloaded into any mobile device. Healthcare, as well has been progressively adding ways to incorporate the use of electronic devices. The use of the patient’s portal and the electronic health record are only a few technological advances in healthcare today. A bedside nurse working in an acute care has the competence with numerous gadgets operated to ease the patient care process.
Unlike the most common uses of Twitter like daily posts to friends and following celebrities, health care related matters pose unique concerns, including but not limited to, patient dignity and privacy, professional oaths to do no harm, legal concerns, and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). For example, “HIPAA governs the permitted use and disclosure of patient information by covered entities, including HCPs and hospitals” (Ventola, L. C., 2014). An HCP may unintentionally breach federal HIPPAA or state privacy laws in several ways when using social media platforms such as Twitter. Whether communicating with or about a patient on social media, breaking patient confidentiality will result in legal action against an HCP
Social media creates a network for nurses to communicate and educate one another effectively, without being in the same city, state or even in the same country. Verified nursing based Twitter accounts update their posts regularly to provide breaking healthcare related news to a very large follower base (Peate, 2013). Nursing web communities provide a platform for real-time discussions or debates. Contributions can be found from professionals from various areas, with unique input. (Peate, 2013). Social media is also a wonderful tool for continuing education. YouTube videos allow professionals to review subjects and learn new ideas just like they would in classroom, but in their own time and pace (Source). A nurse can review topics on virtually any information, just by Googling a certain subject, and watching a video from another professional. While these examples are all extremely useful, nurses must still be conscious of what they are posting or commenting online. These platforms are still expected to be professional, and a nurse’s reputation is still at stake. (Peate,
While it can cause harm, technology has many good qualities. Health care facilities can work together efficiently to use social media to engage patients to maintain health care needs and promote treatment options worldwide. Healthcare professional can also teach other doctors and nurses through Twitter, Facebook, and other social media sites. Social media can create innovation and gives the whole medical field a educational value which should be embraced. Phones are also used by patients to gain knowledge that can be used to better their own life: “19% of smartphone owners have at least one health app on their phone. Exercise, diet, and weight apps are the most popular types” (Penn,
There are many concerns about privacy policies and confidentiality on social media. “Social media pose many risks for health care organizations that could potentially affect the safety and security of patient information, patient consent, employment practices, physician credentialing and licensure, the violation of patient boundaries and other ethical issues” (NCBI, year). The use of social media has to keep HIPAA in mind so that there are no violations done. Doing so will result in the avoidance of legal action against the health care provider and organization. If there is any social media that links to a patient it must have all personal identifying information removed. There could be also improper descriptions or discussion of a patient on social media that could potentially violate privacy policies. Patient’s consent is a crucial part of social medial and that a patient’s permission is needed to comply with HIPPA. Another pitfall is that hospitals can not control and manage conservations and the negative comments made. The organization is opened to criticism due to social media. A patient can write about a negative experience or encounter in a blog or post on the organization’s social media. There must be a rise of highlighting the positives to outweigh the
Nowadays, it is not only common to have social media accounts such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, but expected. Many people know the numerous benefits of signing-up for these accounts: keeping in touch with friends, being able to organize information and photographs, keeping track of dates or news, and many more. However, new research suggests that the use of these social media networks, specifically Twitter, can cause great unhappiness in relationships (“Twitter use…”). It appears that the social media page can act as a third member of the relationship. The use of these networks can take up so much time of one or both of the partners, that it is like having another person in the relationship. Unfortunately, this loss of time as well as the other negative affects social media has on relationships, can lead to communication issues and arguments.
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
Social media has impacted everyone that has used it some point in his or her life. Since the world is increasing in technology advances, so is social media which can be good and bad. Technology has made a huge difference in the world and definitely how people are doing things now. Yes, the Internet can be good for the majority of things we use it for such as finding research, keeping in touch with family or friends who are far away, and saving time and money. Others like to take advantage of social media and use it in a way that can hurt people; it may not hurt them physically, but it can hurt them emotionally. Examples of how some people use the Internet in a bad way include cyberbullying, identity theft, or cyberstalking. Social media has impacted the Millennial generation for sure.
