Growing technology has changed the way people receive information. People have always had a way to receive information such as newspapers, local news stations, etc. Social media has changed the way information was transmitted. Instead of waiting to learn the filtered news days after it occurred, now social media has made raw information available in seconds. Changes in technology have caused extreme awareness of police brutality, such changes include instantaneous, raw footage. News barely made it to the local news stations which then took days or weeks to reveal. The material the news stations covered was a filtered and censored version of the actual event. This made it easy to shield the atrocity of events. Times have changed. Social media has changed the entire concept of receiving news. Instantaneously people everywhere, internet permitting, can see the actual events. People absorb this information and react. Social media has given so many people the ability to stay involved in the world by showing them tragic events. This allows them to focus on how to change the world for the better. Police brutality has been a well known topic thanks to social media. Police brutality has been around for a very long time. Social media has recently brought a spotlight on this. If someone sees police brutality their first instinct is to pull out their phone to videotape it. Then, they post it on a social media website for everyone to see. People then form their opinions on said video. They use their opinions and reactions to do something to try and change injustices such as police brutality. Before social media existed, police brutality was overlooked. News stations would be pressured not to show original videos. Social media gives everyone a voice and a way to witness the events that happened first hand. People, especially in democracies, need to be well informed of everything going on in their country in order to vote for ways to make it better.
