Prior to the millennium, it was advocated that in order maintain relevant in a technologically developing society, cultural and heritage institutions must partake in digitisation for cataloguing and preservation. Presently, these institutions are once again embroiled in a further necessity of compliance with technology: web 2.0’s social media facets and the ‘professionalization of social media .’ The infixing of social media tools has resulted in transforming the operation of cultural institutions such as galleries, libraries, archives and museums in the areas of internal and external audience engagement and fundamental collections management. In this examination, social media shall be characterized as a causation of web 2.0 and its ability to facilitate interactions. The definition of web 2.0 as ‘the social web, which emphasises participation over dissemination ,’ allows for the creation of an online community and can profoundly transform the relationship of institution and audience as shall be fully explicated.

A balance of ‘using both the ‘I’ of the IPhone and the IPad and the eye of the physical eye ,’ is how Anne Buddle, Head of Exhibitions and Collections Management for National Galleries of Scotland, described the implementation of digital and social media inside a cultural institution. Social media can permeate the operations of cultural institutions through manifestation of physical facilitators such as mobile devices internally.
