The term Big Brother is used to refer to any ruler or government that invades the privacy of its citizens. When interning at a celebrity PR film it became evident that celebrity and the media are impacting and watching over all citizens. These constructs effect a tremendous amount of notions in our lives. Whether it be the latest election, culture, consumerism, unrealistic depictions, and a plethora of more constructs. We abide by these unwritten “laws” in order to fit the norms we see as normal. Social media has been the window to media and knowledge is constantly being spread. Social media can be considered the media in entirety because that is where all of the media lies. It is effecting the classroom and all aspects of the academic process. In “Effects of Social Media on College Students”, research explains how social media effects the day to day lives of college students. In the study, participants were given an anonymous questionnaire on the effects of social media and their college life. Many of the questions and answers alluded to negative aspects. Mainly in terms of academics, its tendencies to increase considerable distractions. Also, leaving reality to live to be absorbed in a virtual zone for hours of the day. A large analysis within the study was if college students check social media during class and when doing schoolwork. Results show “Ninety percent of students spent their time on entertainment; there were not too many college students who preferred using social media to deal with their homework. Eighty percent of the sample admitted that they posted or responded while completing homework” (Chen, Liang, Wang, 2011). Essentially, most college students prefer to use social media and in turn spend expansive hours checking these sites. Facebook tended to be the most popular used in and out of class. The attraction for social media lies within the fact that it provides a new world to make friends and new connections. Social media immediately relieves pressure.
