I want you to imagine something. Picture a fifteen-year-old, vulnerable to the world around her. Picture her going online and being barraged by images of self-harm, emaciated girls, and suicide scenes. These images seem tragically beautiful, and to young girl, that may be the case. However, the more she sees these images, the worse her mental state becomes. She has subconsciously developed the problems being romanticized on social media such as Tumblr, and the only way she can cope is by posting similar things, thus creating a vicious cycle.
Tumblr, a popular social/blogging website, has many communities within the website, including one for those who suffer from mental illnesses (Bine). This sense of community, while seemingly innocent and almost helpful, can be destructive. ...iety medication, I have become much happier and more stable. I found accounts online that promoted recovery and encouraged others to be happy, and those helped me pick myself up a little bit at a time. However, the main thing that helped me reach recovery was the support of my friends and family. If it were not for them, I probably would not be alive today.
As one can see, the Internet can have detrimental effects on mental health, particularly when it comes to depression. Although the sense of community and the existence of pro-recovery sites can aid recovery, the majority of mental illness related Internet use is designed to drag someone down and potentially aid with suicide. Instead of seeking comfort in the darkness that surrounds such regions of the Internet, people should turn to their friends and family for love and support so that they can begin to recover.
