The identity you put online is who you aspire to be; the idea of forming a new identity for yourself has addictive qualities. People create an avatar, which is essentially a fictional, online persona. There are many different programs, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Second Life, where individuals can create their ideal selves through avatars. That persona can be manipulated within the different programs to provide the perception of the social life, physical appearance, and economic status one has always wanted but feels they cannot obtain.
One of the most popular social media applications where you can also portray yourself in a different light is Instagram. On Instagram you create a profile and post pictures for your followers to see. To create a larger audience of followers, it is common for people to download applications to pay for people to follow them. By agreeing to monthly payments, you can increase the amount of likes on your photos. There are also applications to monitor who follows or unfollows your account. People use that to maintain a proper ratio of following-to-followers. These pictures usually have a lot of edits and filters to make one’s self look better, photo shopped even. An Instagram profile can consist of other pictures that are usually of a scenic view, which can be considered “basic”. A “basic” picture is one that is commonly seen on other profiles, deemed by the media to be not unique on purpose. However, most users would only post these pictures to gain acceptance in the social media world. The “basic” pictures portray non-defining characteristics of oneself, posted mostly to gain ample “likes” from their followers. ...at their future is also in jeopardy by how you identify yourself online. With the ability to instantly post or upload picture or thoughts, people put less thought into what is put on their pages.
The addictive qualities of technology can be seen in good and bad ways. According to Aye’s user in Second Life “I call on Second Life as the best and the worst thing that has ever happened to me it was after getting her days strayed other things just weren’t important anymore…” (Life 2.0). He believes that the life of his avatar is more important this his physical self. The positive aspects of having an online persona, lime I discussed is the ability to redo parts of your life that may have been tragic. The negative affects include the addiction to the game and websites. The programs can “take over” your physical life, socially, mentally, emotionally and even economically.
