The usage of social media websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, and Google+ are very useful tools. Considering the facts of increase communication with friends and families around the globe without having a noticeable effect monetarily. Social media websites have its down falls. Has convenient as it sounds, protecting a user’s information is not quite its strongest suit. Other users have the ability to view another user’s personal information when a user is “offline”. Sharing personal information through social media websites seems harmless, but it can have an effect on its user, which can cause serious damage. Such as, reputation, job security, and raise concern and problems with family and friends. With time, social media websites has grown technologically and developed with extreme. Companies that have created social media websites have also created an easy way to access them, by downloading an “app” on a smartphone, which provides faster communication throughout the whole entire world. Creating a profile on these sites at no cost will help a user find friends and family, as well as, others do a search on a user, whether known or unknown to them. As easy and convenient it sounds, it also entails risk. Risk in compromising personal information, also known as identity theft. The risk of leaking personal information through social media websites are out of a user’s control. “Predators, hackers, business competitors, and foreign state actors troll social networking sites looking for information or people to target for exploitation.”(FBI. It is necessary to know what are the consequences of leaked information and what further steps to take to protect personal information. Providing relevant and creditable information on how to keep personal information secured will provide peace of mind, decrease the amount of identity theft, and reasoning before placing a post and/or picture on a site. As a user it is a necessity and priority to set browsers and privacy setting to decrease personal information being leaked. A user should not provide “passport” information, nor provide any information that can cause serious damage to reputation, career, and impact on family and friends.
