Social Justice is a concept of human rights and is essentially, as defined above, about creating equality on all levels for all peoples. Social justice is often measured explicitly in terms of wealth and social privileges. Social justice issues arise when wealth and social privilege are given to one group but denied to another, often a minority or 'outsider ' group.
Social Justice a has a long history in Canada dating back to the 19th century, although social justice issues stretch much further back than that date. Many of the first attempts in dealing with social justice issues were spurned on from the industrial revolution and the attempts to aid the poor of the era. I believe that the option of having a direct comparison of the students life in the south versus the lives of those in Northern Canada on these social justice issues, allows the students to sympathize and emphasize in instances where they would possibly have troubling, such as in cases where there is not a direct comparison as in historical trauma.
Historical trauma is, I believe, the most difficult topic to be introduced and taught to young students in the south. Although difficult to introduce historical trauma is likely one of the most important topics to have the students familiar with, as it is the cause of lots of other social issues that have presented themselves in the south.
