Some presenting social issues in Silver City community that would be of interest to the social workers are: homelessness, lack of mental institutions, employment scarcity, poverty, drug and alcoholic abuse. Social concern/Issue/Problem However, the particular need assessments I will be discussing will be homelessness. McKinney Act (1987) defines a homeless person as: “(1) an individual who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence and (2) an individual who has a primary nighttime residence that is (a) a supervised, publicly or privately operated shelter designed to provide temporary living accommodations (including welfare hotels, congregate shelters, and transitional housing …show more content…

Poor people who do not have the resources to live in an apartment because there is no affordable accommodation or shelter wander around with their belongings from one location to the next. Also, those with mental problems are part of this group. There is no mental institution in the community that can help them with the addiction issues and because of this they roam around the environment in their conditions, some of them causing harm to the community members and properties. Instead, of them being taken to an appropriate helping center, they are placed in prison, which does not resolve the problems but worsens the situations. And when released they repeat the same pattern by making the environment feel unsafe for themselves and the community at large. The creation of an organization called “Takes a Village” which is introducing a way of providing good shelter for the homeless has enabled the media to participate in the cause of advocating for the homeless population, and without this organization there was really no emphasis on the …show more content…

Research and data Unfortunately, there is no statistical data developed in the Silver City community for better understanding of the problem, and in my research on this issue, there were more discussions on New Mexico in general than this small rural community. However, through my research, I discovered that the Silver City Gospel Mission, which is a non-profit organization housed 1,000 men in its cold winter shelter and housed women year-round in the Sierra House Program. This particular agency tries to combat the issue, and the homeless population depend on the agency for such help, but only during the cold month are they able to shelter the men. Policy A policy that has impacted the problem of homelessness in the community is the amendment made by the town council to city ordinances that prohibit camping in town and where people are even prevented from camping on their own property. With this amendment the homeless are in a more difficult position and apart from the fact that there is no provision of shelter, they are even banned from trying to create a comfortable place for themselves through the use of their
