Social factors affect our lifestyle, family and wealth. One specific social factor that stands out to me is gender equality in the work force. To be exact, I’m talking about the lack of equality towards women in the workforce. As stated previously, this social factor affects not only one 's livelihood, but also the amount of salary and the ability to obtain and sustain work for women. Gender equality discourages women from pursuing a job outside of the status quo. The US dropped out of the top 20 in gender equality because wage similarity for similar jobs are dropping and there are fewer women in high government positions. My aunt had a chance to become the head of her department at her job, she was pushed to apply by her bosses because they felt like she would be a great fit. Gender equality in the workforce has gotten worse and I don’t see it getting better anytime soon. The mindset of society has to shift and unfortunately we are intractable and stuck in our ways and don’t like change. The competition would be too much for some men, to see a woman do their job but a little better would annul them and I don’t think the corporate world is ready for that yet. A woman who is equally qualified for the job as a man should not be discriminated against because of their gender. Women work just as hard if not harder to receive the degree they are striving for. Women are still going to continue to fight and rupture the chains of labels created by society that bound them. Once I get out into the workforce I’m going to defy the odds and do something never done before by a woman. A stride in the right direction came to be when the Civil Rights Act was put into order. The Civil Rights Act made discrimination of different kinds illegal (for example sexual discrimination was outlawed). The passing of the act, set forward different social trends. Being that women were expected to be either homemakers or be in fields considered womanly, with the new changes came strides to go into different fields. Major occupational changes occurred across various fields. In the airline industry, women had strict rules that they needed to abide by to be able to work. Rules such as they needed to be married or they had to avoid becoming pregnant etc. After the Civil Rights Act was passed, those “rules” dissipated. While I researched my project I learned that everyone everyone contributes to sexism in one way or another, and we all need to band together to stop it. Women are discriminative against other women, as well as men. Men are discriminative against other men, and obviously women. In the future I hope to see a world where a women makes the same amount as a man, for the same amount of work. I hope to see every girl all over the world getting an education. I thirst for the day when a women comes out to her family and she is taken seriously. I can’t wait to see the day when a woman is president. And most of all I hope I see the end of sexism.

Gender discrimination in the workplace is something that both men and women experience, women more than men. For instance, the current gender pat gap is 21 percent. This means that women are currently making 21 percent less than what their male counterparts are making. It has decreased over the years, but it is still a significant gap. In the workplace, women do not only experience discrimination in pay, but also in opportunities. An article states that, women are deemed less communal than men and that makes them less suited for certain careers (Miner, et. al, 2014). This thought alone puts women at a disadvantage when they are entering the labor force.

It occurs from differences in socially constructed gender roles as well as biologically through chromosomes, brain structure, and hormonal differences. In 2006, the World Economic Forum introduced The Global Gender Gap Index. It is a framework that captures the magnitude and capacity of gender-based disparities and tracking their progress. The index measures national gender gaps on political, economic, education and health based criteria, and provides country rankings that allow for effective comparisons across regions and income groups, over time. When people are talking about CEO’s, Presidents or any other person in a high position, who comes to mind? For most people, the person that comes to mind is a white male. Even in one of the most progressive and modern countries in the world males are associated with positions of power. Gender inequality refers to the unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. Although we have made abundant steps in narrowing gender inequality, patriarchy still continues in society and thus women today have yet to gain the same opportunities in the workplace. Even with acts such as the Equal Pay Act that passed 35 years ago, today, half of the workforce is consists of women, but the average workingwoman earns only 80.9% of what the workingman makes. There is also a lack of promotion in high positions for qualified women in the work force. These are just a few of the work place inequalities that females are faced with. Since the nineteen hundredths women in America have been fighting for equality within the workplace. Popular belief would make you believe that today woman are equal to men in every aspect in the workplace. Although, this concept should be true in a lot of the cases it is not. Gender discrimination is the action of being treated worse than others, simply because of your gender. It can occur once or continually over time, by the opposite or same sex. It is an illegal practice here in the United States, based on laws enacted in 1963-4.
The first reason for gender inequality is income disparities. The reason for income disparities is because men are getting more median wage than women. Women are often paid less for the same thing as men only because they are women. So the realization had once been deliberately chosen less high paying careers than men. Some of these jobs would be secretarial, clerical to explain why men in a particular company would make more money than a women in the same company. That may have been true once, but no longer that way in today’s economy. Now that more women are holding mid-level management jobs the career choices by men are ambitions to women’s pay disparities.
Sexism is a major factor in the workforce.Today male and female have a hard time breaking into the opposite gender dominated fields. This has happened because of the media, it has showed us that male have certain “right” jobs, as well as female. Female still dominate traditional female professions like cosmetology jobs are 92.9 percent women working them(Wolfe). If a man were to get into cosmetology they would most likely be judged for having that job, because we stereotype that they can't have a feminine job. Women have a harder time getting into high level positions. “Women make up only 21 of the S&P’s 500 CEOs,” (Berman). This has happened because the media has set in place stereotypes that it is wrong for women to have high level positions. It is getting better, in 2013 women chief financial officers increased 35 percent at large U.S. companies from 2012 (Frier and Hymowitz). The job market for men and women is still unfair but it is starting to get equal.
From the beginning of history and to this day women still get paid less than the average man, but why? Whoever said that women are incapable of good work performance? Whoever said that women do not have the same responsibilities to maintain? What really makes a women’s work inferior to men? The answer is nothing. Today, women are depended on just as much as men, and are capable of performing at their level. However, a full-time working woman earns only seventy-seven cents for every dollar a man makes. These days women make up half the workplace in our society; they work just as hard and for the same reasons. Women deserve to be paid at an equal rate as men because they are relied on to uphold the same responsibilities and are just as qualified to perform at a man’s level.
The sexism and inequality intertwined with the work force is still a big problem today. Unlike in the early 1900’s, there is closer to an equal ratio of men to women in the work force. But women are still more present in typical jobs such as secretaries, nurses, and waitresses, whereas men are more present in jobs such as construction, CEO’s, and politicians. I experienced something similar at my place of work. I’m a barista at my local coffee shop, and all of my coworkers are female. Any time my boss is hiring, there are very few male resumes that come in. But if there are any mechanical problems, the first person she calls is her husband or father to come and fix it. This clear division between men and women is one of the causes of the gender gap. The gender gap is the difference in pay between men and women who work the same job.
