Sometimes she needs an interpreter when she is talking to the specialist or the nurse. The interpreter is often her son. She doesn’t know what health services could improve in to help her manage her health better. She would like it if they explain things to her better. She also talk about how her old G.P. who moved overseas, he would explain to her everything and scheduled for her regular body checks. The G.P. now doesn’t really care and is lazy. Social economic status, education, early life and nutrition are involved with the manifestation of Margaret 's health problems. When she was young she had a lower social economic status, therefore she had a lack of education about these health problems. She did not know which foods to not eat too much. Food security when she was younger was also a problem sometimes she starved. Also not knowing how important it is to exercise. As she lived in a different country for most of her life political influences is also a social determinant that could have affected her health status. Social factors like personal, family, community, and national levels strongly affect the health of adolescents.(Viner, R,M. and etc… 2012 ) If health isn’t looked after during the younger ages, there would be many health complications when older. Chronic disease such as coronary heart disease could be avoided by having a healthy diet and exercising, if Margaret was educated about it when younger she may have avoided
Social determinants of health have attracted the attention of governments, policy makers and international health organisations over the last three decades (Hankivsky & Christoffersen 2008). This is because social conditions which people are born in, live and work play an important role in their health outcomes (WHO 2015). According to Kibesh (1200) social determinants drive health disparities, disrupts the human developmental process and undermine the quality of life and opportunities for people and families (ref). Thus, several theories have been developed over the years to provide in-depth understanding of the social determinants of health and to reduce health inequalities (Hankivsky & Christoffersen, 2008). However, there is still significant
According to the World Health Organisation (2017) the social determinants of health are defined as the conditions where people are born, grown, work and live, which also includes the health system. The social determinants of health determined populations health’s outcomes and therefore linked with health inequalities (WHO, 2017)
Outlined within this essay are two sociological theories which have been investigated this will be in conjunction with a contemporary health issue. This then will be related to how the individual’s lifestyle and social class to give the reader a better understanding of this health issue.

Social Determinants of health is the “conditions in which people are born, live, work and age that affect their health” Healthypeople.gov. (2017). Social Determinants of Health | Healthy People 2020. [online] Available at: https://www.healthypeople.gov/2020/topics-objectives/topic/social-determinants-of-health [Accessed 22 Sep. 2017]. The determinants of health are important because it helps create policies to make changes, as well as improving public health conditions by addressing the different health outcomes an individual can face and improving the need for healthier conditions. Healthy People 2020 organizes the determinants of health in both a social and physical determinant which has an impact on health.
Adam Smith an 18th century economist and philosopher once remarked, “ The real tragedy of the poor is the poverty of their aspirations”. Over 1.3 billion people today live on a dollar a day or less, yet due to its interconnectedness, multidimensionality, and wide ranging relativity, the condition of poverty remains nearly indefinable (Birdsall & Londoño,1997, p. 32). For the sake of this paper, poverty will defined as: A situation in which the level of living of an individual, family, or group is below the standard of the community (PAHO 2014). Often times, because of its complexity, individuals examine poverty through its influences known as the Social Determinants of Health (SDH): “The complex, integrated, and overlapping social structures
Addiction can be defined as the use of a drug or stimulus that has unreasonably taken control of a person’s behaviour. (Scollo & Winstanley 2012). It is a serious and complex issue hence the social determinants of health need to be addressed to the community and be used to guide nurses with knowledge to use in the nursing practice. Addiction to drug use has contributed to thousands of deaths, social and family disruption, violence, crime and workplace issues. In 2013, over 40% of Australians consumed alcohol, smoked tobacco or used illicit drugs at risky levels making them more likely to become addicted. (Claydon et. al 2014) The population in remote areas were found to be, twice as likely to have an addiction to tobacco, alcohol and drugs
Communities are sometimes largely unaware that social factors rather than medical ones, such as income, and employment status, shape our health. Our health is also determined by the health and social services we receive, and our ability to attain high education levels, food and safe housing, among other factors.
Health is a large cause of one of the most important social divisions in society, with a divide existing between those whom are healthy and those who are not. Your health largely impacts the quality of life which you can lead, meaning there is those who are healthy and can lead a good quality of life, and those whose quality of life is impaired by illness and the potential illness surrounding their lives. The divisions which create health inequalities affect many aspects of everyday life. Though this division is sometimes just down to pure chance, there are structural factors which mean that those who face ill health often come from particular groups. Gender, ethnicity and class all have an influence on health inequalities. Those from lower social classes are more likely to be unhealthy, work and live in hazardous conditions are have more unhealthy lifestyles including poor diet and smoking. too there are large differences in health between ethnicities, such as the way minorities are alienated by the health system. Gender is too something which can have an impact on health inequalities. Though everyone can feel the effects of ill health, this is something which is more likely to impact certain groups, especially those whom are less privileged. Structural inequalities within in our society mean that class, ethnicity and gender are all large factors in health inequalities.
The main approach of the social determinant of health is how the society provides the economic and social resources to their population in order to improve public policies and health. The social determinant of health has introduced in the mid of 19th century in which the living conditions of the society were the main factors of health (Engels, 1845/1947; Virchow, 1848/1985).After this research there was a number of studies that have proved that the people who are exposed to their social and physical conditions in their homes, workplaces and communities are more significant towards their health than their living conditions such as the usage of tobacco or too much intake of alcohol, eating fruits or vegetables and daily
A person’s health along with the health of a community are influenced heavily by the social determinants of health. These determinants create a strong foundation for a healthy and proper development of a community (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2013). Further, a proper foundation will allow the children within the community to develop properly, which will foster their potential for intellectual and physical intelligence. This paper will explore the effects of healthy childhood development, personal health practices and coping skills, health services and income and social statuses with in the Maple Leaf neighbourhood. Further, this paper will explore how the above social determinants of health directly affect the students of St. Fidelis school. Lastly, this paper will explain how the rise in cavities within these children is an issue as well as approached to overcome this issue.
The biomedical model of health has been criticised because it fails to include the psychological and social causes relating to an individual’s medical illness or health, looking only at the biological causes (Giddens and Sutton, 2013). Therefore, sociologists being aware of the impacts of social structure and lifestyle on health have put in various efforts to place the study of ‘the social’ at the core of health and healthcare examination.
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are increasingly becoming a major problem of Public Health around the World. The impact of resources and material deprivation among people and populations has resulted in an increase in mortality rate on a planetary scale. Social determinants of health are defined as the personal, social, economic and the environmental conditions which determines the health status of an individual or population (Gardner, 2013). Today’s society is characterized by inequalities in health, education, income and many other factors which as a result is becoming a burden for Public Health around the world. Research studies have shown that the conditions in which people live and work strongly influenced their health. Individuals with high levels of education and fall within the high income bracket turn to have stable jobs, live in the best neighborhood and have access to quality health care system than individuals who have low education and fall with the low income bracket. This paper is to explain different social determinants of health and how they play ...
Over the years, the social determinants of health (SDOH) have been receiving more attention due to its importance in determining peoples’ health access, health quality and health outcome. The social determinants of health have been described by various scholars as the situation or environmental condition in which people are born, or where they grow, live and work; unfortunately these conditions have continued to affect and determine people’s ability to access proper care.1-5 In other words, the SDOH continues to consciously and unconsciously influence people’s access to most opportunities in life including access to healthcare services both in developed and developing countries.2 This issues have continue to deteriorate in most developing countries increasing people’s susceptibility to multi-morbidity among different age groups, with a slight increase among the elderly.6
Social determinants of health has been a large topic for many years and can have a positive and negative effect on individuals, families and communities. (World Health Organisation, 2009) The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, including the health system. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels, which are themselves influenced by policy choices. Social determinants have many factors and in this essay education will be the main social determinant of health discussed and how this could have an impact on the physical and mental sides of health.
