1) What is the social construction of reality? How might it be illustrated in the film? Provide specific examples.

Social construction of reality is the act of a person shapes his reality following the ideas of a group or culture. In social construction of reality, we shape our beliefs and ideas because our social group beliefs on those ideas. The society creates its own definition of reality, and imposes rules for all individuals of the group. Communication is the essential tools for maintenance of the social structure. Our society for example, has the same jointly build ideas of the world, but other society in china for example has another group of ideas of the world. This is social construction of reality. Imagine that we all are radios, and there is a central that is the society we live in, who sends messages to all of us in the group. We all receive the same transmission, but we have different minds and that transmission has different meanings. We all will get the same message but no mind is the same, so we will get the same words but our mind will create a different meaning for that words. For example: The radio will say that a new Pepsi plan will be installed in town. Who receive that message will decrypt in different meanings. For a unemployed guy, it will mean a chance to get a job. For the city Mayer, it could mean good revenue to the city. Everyone will have a different understanding about that message. This is social construction of reality.
In the movie Gattaca, social construction of reality was illustrated by Vincent, who was not a genetically perfect child. Vincent could manage with the help of Jerome, who was a genetically perfect person, to be hired as perfect and succeed. Even though...

5) Define the Horatio Algers myth. How is that myth represented or destroyed in the film? Be specific in your answers.

Horatio Alger was a novelist and he was known as to be the father of the American Dream. He claimed that if a person works hard and with determination can achieve success in life. With his "rags to riches" stories that he wrote, he helped the US population in believe in the myth that everyone can get rich as long be determinate and hard worker.
In the Gattaca movie, the best representation of this myth was Vincent, who wasn’t a genetically perfect man and discriminated for being a child not conceived in laboratory. Vincent didn’t have much chance in life because he wasn’t born perfect, but he had determination and he work hard to be equal to the valid, which were the perfect men. With his determination he was the best in his work.
