Gender is a popular topic in the world today. It is a subject that is talked about and argued over, yet even with all the discussions being had, there are numerous other matters related to gender that should also be considered and included in the conversation. One of these issues is parenthood. The two articles “The Social Construction of Gender” and “The Joys of Parenthood, Reconsidered” each talk about how their topics are influenced by culture. “The Social Construction of Gender” talks about gender as a concept created by society. In it, the author explains why society felt the need to create gender as a social institution and how gender is embedded into everyday life. The labeling of people as male or female is used by societies as a way of deciding who takes over which responsibilities and who does which tasks. People would still have their biology to classify them as male or female, but what would happen if it were normal for a person to exhibit both masculine and feminine traits simultaneously? Children could all be raised in the same way and taught the same things as opposed to teaching boys to behave in one way and girls to behave in another way. Kids could pick their interests based on what they are passionate about instead of what society expects them to do. Instead of a person’s personality being defined by their gender, they could act according to how they feel fits them as opposed to how they feel they are supposed to be. Males could be sensitive and emotional and females could be assertive and serious without anyone harassing them about it. Without gender, there would be no more gender inequality because men and women would just be seen as people instead of being split up into groups where one has the advantage over the
