The world offers us many things, and the only way for us to use them is by grasping the social concepts and moving forward. The rules that we are to live by are the reasons why we commit to things in specific ways. Ralph Emerson says, “The world is nothing, man is all, it is for you to dare all” (432). I believe that the world, in general, has a meaning that many people cannot see. The world is vast, and yet we are very small. We are meant to travel these vast lands and oceans to explore everything the earth has to offer. It is, in fact, one of the things that keeps us moving forward in life. Paulo Freire says, “Problem-posing education, as a humanist and liberating praxis, posits as fundamental that the people subjected to domination must fight for their emancipation” (226). There are many reasons as to why students have trouble with the banking education method. The method is simply not “incompetent friendly” and all the students who have trouble with the subjects are then cast aside, and frequently repeat the process as the years go by. Clearly, there must be a change. This is where Freire’s “problem-posing” education argument comes into play. This type of learning process is arguably harder than the banking method, but it does cover for the students who are far back and cannot get back on track. The teachers also play a huge role in both learning systems as well. If a teacher is not trying to encourage a student to do well in school, then the student might as well not try at all. In this case, I am referring to high school students. Most high school students have trouble writing, and I would know, because I was one of them. Writing in high school can be a challenge especially when most of the writing skills that were to be learned in elementary were not cleaned up and polished appropriately before entering high school. Herbert Otto, an esteemed author, once wrote, “Change and growth take place when a person has risked themselves and dares to become involved in experimenting with their own life” (Wilderdom: A Project in Natural Living & Transformation). Essentially, Otto is saying that in order to grow as a person and become educated, one must break free from what bring him or her comfort, which allows him or her to be daring and adventurous. Christopher McCandless holds a similar view point on education and experimentation or adventure, which can be seen in Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild. Recent high school graduates are not well prepared to face society as it really is cruel, confusing, and tough. In school students are not taught skills they will need out of the classroom, what they are taught is memorization, and multiple choice test taking in which they can guess their way through or just simply cheat. In the article “For Once, Blame the Students” by the author Patrick Welsh he states that “Failure in the classroom is often tied to lack of funding, poor teachers or other skills. Here 's a thought: Maybe it 's the failed work ethic of today’s kids” (Welsh). When teachers teach a new lesson they make students take notes on their textbook and then, they give them multiple choice tests to see if they learned anything. Learning
In Chapter 2, “The ‘Banking Concept of Education,” from the book Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1989), Paulo Freire criticizes the education system, comparing it to a “banking concept.” The author also points out the system is broken and needs to be overhauled.
One teacher may adopt the banking concept while the other may utilize the problem-posing concept. However, while problem-posing education generates creativity by giving students the ability to communicate, banking education does not. Freire asserts that in the “banking” concept of education, “the teacher chooses the program content, and the students (who were not consulted) adapt to it” (217). Freire indicates that students, who are victims of banking education, have no control over how an instructor chooses to teach. Therefore, creativity is destroyed by the fact that it was not even permitted in the first place. Students are not able to express their opinions or solve problems using their own methods because in order to pass the class, students not only need to adapt to the teaching style of their professors but think like them too. Freire’s quote relates to experiences I have had with “banking” teachers throughout my twelve years of formal education. Those teachers only taught using textbooks, therefore, they insisted that the textbook was always right. If I were to solve a math problem using a technique different from the book, then I would not get points for the problem even though my answer was right. And if I were to interpret an open-ended essay different from how my teacher would then my interpretations would be wrong. By doing this, my teachers destroyed my creativity. I was prohibited from my own thoughts and penalized if I expressed them. The only alternative for me was to become a “robot” that followed the orders of authorities, but being a “robot” was not something I was ashamed of. In fact, my role as a “robot” led me to better understand the “drama of Education” in which teachers attempt to “regulate the way the world ‘enters into’ the students”. Nowadays, students are being spoon fed information in the classroom instead of actually “learning”. Teachers, who should be inspiring students to be individuals and going out to seek and learn are instead basically giving students the information just to make it easier upon themselves. Although it may be easy now, in the future when the same students that have been fed information have to go out and actually learn and find information, they won’t be able to. Students are too reliant on teachers giving them information so they won’t have to do work. Students in this generation are being complacent in a “short-cut” society and take the easy way out in everything they possibly can.
The intellectual and scientific Enlightenment of the eighteenth century produced two images conceptualizing what should be the proper approach to education; one was the student as an empty vessel which is “filled” by the teacher, the other as a seed, nourished and assisted in growing, but ultimately becoming its own unique flower. Frieri describes in great detail these two approaches as the “banking” model and as the “problem-posing" model. In the “banking” model, Frieri explains that “education becomes an act of depositing” where the teacher deposits information and the students “patiently receive, memorize, and repeat” (Frieri, 72). Through this essay I am going to try and show the advantages of “problem posing” style to education. In my opinion this style of education is very effective in expanding the minds of the receiver by making them more interactive in their learning rather than the typical lecture and take notes. In this style of education people teach each other and the teacher is not the only one enlightening the class with their knowledge. I cannot only speak this opinion from my own experiences, but also others who share in the same view sculpted by their experiences. Over the course of the 21st century, there has been a steady decline in the rate of high school graduates. With such an important factor to the success of adolescents, school administrations have begun to take notice of such unacceptable findings. In this process they have attempted to understand the needs of our youth and the methods that give them the opportunity to become better readers, writers and overall students. To these young individuals, these years of development are pivotal to there success as adults. Educators must work together with the student to understand their individual forms of learning, not every student is the same and must be given the opportunity to learn no matter what the circumstance might be.
Freire in his essay "The ‘Banking’ Concept of Education" confronts this situation. He calls this one sided way of teaching the "banking method of education." Also, he proposes a "problem posing method" as a solution to the unfavorable "banking method." In the "problem posing method" the students and teacher work together at a common level and learn from each other. His analysis of the "banking method of education" and its antithesis, the "problem posing method," has many parallels to my educational experiences. These similarities make me agree that Freire’s "problem posing method" is more advantageous than the common "banking method."
The concept of banking education attempts “by mythicizing reality, to conceal certain facts which explain the way human beings exist in the world; problem-posing education sets itself the task of demythologizing.”. Banking education rejects dialogue. dialogue is necessary in order to develop students’ critical thinking ability.The problem-posing method contrasts from the banking method. It is when teachers and students come together to discuss questions and come to conclusions. This method is a lot more useful because one persons opinion or views can be challenged by other peoples beliefs. This leads to open discussion where new information can be attained. This discussion helps people truly understand the realism of the world and helps them be able to apply the information used in real life. People can subconsciously pick things up from this and they might not realize it until they apply it later on in life. Once they apply it in real life they will realize that the way they are educated was the right way because they are actually able to problem solve and think for themselves instead of simply repeating information that they received. It takes more skill and it is a lot more satisfying when you solve a problem for yourself throughout questioning the topic. Children are typically put down when they want to be a musician, actor, artist, etc. they are pushed into careers that will ‘further society’s progress’. “...academic ability, which has really come to dominate our view of intelligence...the whole system of public education around the world is a protracted process of university entrance...the consequence is that many highly-talented, brilliant, creative people think they're not...[due] to the thing they were good at school wasn't valued…” (TED). Student are pushed from their passions and encouraged to attend universities to help industrialize the world. Although industrialization is inherently important, an individual's possible success in other fields are influenced negatively during early academic years. When locked into a state of standardization many students can not succeed and that is when education will fail and get dispirited due to bad grades. “They’re quitting because they’re discouraged and bored...creative people, for the most part, exhibit active moods and positive affect. They’re not particularly happy...But they’re engaged, motivated, and open to the world…”(Bronson). Many students stop paying attention in class, they day dream, draw or write stories; they get disciplined when they don’t pay attention in a classroom setting or if they are too fidgety. Is it better to have for a teacher to who challenge their students to do work on their own , or is better for a teacher to spoon feed their students? The chapter from Empowering Education is written from the perspective of Ira Shor, a college professor who teaches a basic writing class in Manhattan. Shor’s point of view is to challenge students to think and be creative on their own and to find their inner voice. The students, being placed in a basic writing class, are defeated even before they start. These students have a little confidence in their ability to write after having failed the writing exam. Unlike his students, the author was very nervous and excited on the first day. On the first day, his students were unenthusiastic. Shor states,
A abundant amount of high school students in the world don’t completely remember what they’re taught or how it’s being taught to them before they leave for college or begin their career. One of the reasons why students don’t understand is because they think they’ll obtain humiliation for not being strong or as intelligent in that class. Multiple students misconstrue in school because of embarrassment. Another reason why students might not get the education they need is due to the families financial status in their country. Not all countries are as rich as the U.S., so it makes it not as affordable for them to even have one school. Students not getting an education can be caused by them misunderstanding what they’re being taught. The way that the teacher explains it might not be enough for the students to understand what they’re being taught.
People understand the real meanings of their lives when they start observing their surroundings. Self-knowledge, and self-examination provide people good opportunity of ameliorating their abilities. There are still people who do not know anything about their lives because they have no idea of realizing their own selves. They only get life for squandering some times and die with having no aims in their lives. Life without ambitions have no meaning to live. An ambitious life very interesting to live.
