It's the year 2004. I'm only 7 years old, dressed in my Landon Donovan jersey, matching athletic shorts, and soccer cleats. I'm in my front yard running and kicking a soccer ball around with my friends. We're laughing and running around without a single care in the world. All of us patiently awaiting the start of the biggest sporting spectacle on Earth, the World Cup. An international soccer tournament that pits nations against each other in a game of physical skill and wits. An event that draws in billions of viewers every four years. For a young fan of the game like myself, euphoria washes over me when I realize it's a World Cup year.
However, despite soccer being the most popular sport worldwide, being a fan in the United States isn't always glamorous. In the United States, the NFL, NBA, and MLB reign supreme and dominate the sports market. Here, people perceive soccer players as "diving wimps" who just "flop" and complain to the referee every time they face a tough break. In this aspect of the game, I can unfortunately see where they're coming from. Growing up a football and soccer fan, I can understand how those who watch the NFL, where tackling and hitting happen every minute, can foresee soccer as weak. Nevertheless, I believe soccer has an immeasurable beauty and intrigue that everyone can appreciate.

The team's following achieved more than I ever thought possible in such a short period of time. In just two years the team went from not existing to seemingly being an overnight sensation. The team started playing college schools for practice, but quickly shot through the ranks and started taking down some of the MLS's best teams. I was elated.
