Most people, when they hear the word organic, automatically think “healthy.” Well, they are not wrong. A recent survey was done in Baltimore, Maryland by researchers Rodman, Palmer, Zachary, Hopkins and Surkan (2014) that sampled people who shopped at their local grocery store. Almost everyone that participated in the survey understood the value and need for a nutrition filled diet. Organic was not necessarily included in the questions that were asked of them, however, a lot of them mentioned it after being asked what their definition of healthy food was. According to Person 1, eating organic food was better because “…I know I don’t want to be eating cloned food and stuff that’s been sprayed all over. I feel like it’s going to make me get health problems or go fast from the earth and I don’t wanna do that.” Person 1 was referring to Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s), pesticides and other health problems from eating non-organic, also known as conventional food. Many talked about the various health issues that could arise from eating conventionally grown food such as cancer, birth defects and growth issues. Person 3, who recently transitioned to eating healthier states that she feels “so much better now that she has changed her eating habits. She is convinced that whether it is chemicals or just the fact that our bodies were not created to ingest the sugar and so forth” (Rodman et al., 2014). Now it is time to convince everyone why switching over to an all-natural, organic diet is better for them.

Buy organic seeds from a store, which are a lot cheaper than buying the fully grown fruit or vegetable at the store, and grow them using compost and other natural resources instead of pesticides and other chemicals. That way, a person will know that the produce they are consuming is 100% organic. It is better for the environment to eat and grow organic. Another way is to support local farmers by buying meat and eggs from their farm stand. Most of these farms pasture raise their animals and use organic farming methods. If a person is not sure, they should ask. It is better to buy local than to buy meat from meat packers and therefore encourage the packers to continue to raise their animals in an inhumane way.
