Snowboarding
Recently in the last few years a new winter sport has started to rise in popularity. No it’s not skiing but it’s snowboarding. Snowboarding has taken a big hit on people who have nothing to do on weekends and weekdays. For some people snowboarding is not just something to do in the winter but, it is like their life. Some of the things that make snowboarding the way snowboarding is right now is the history, the many different competitions out there for boarders to compete in, and the riders them self.
Snowboarding started as just small wood pieces from barrels that kids in the 1920’s would strap onto their feet and ride down their local hill with a clothesline. The snowboarding we know today didn’t really start till about the 1960’s when Sherman Poppen made a toy for his daughter that combined two skis together and mounted the bindings to the skis on it. He called this invention a “snurfer”, a cross between the words surfer and snow. Within a few years Sherman had patented the design and sold almost one million “snurfers”. Within the next decade a 14 year old boy named Jake Burton Carpenter would start a company that is now a worldwide popular snowboarding brand. Jake’s board was made out of wooden planks that used water ski bindings as the bindings for the board. These bindings are very similar to what we have now. Those are just two of the people who have made snowboarding into what it is today and there are many more.
There are many different snowboarding competitions for all different riding levels. Some of the main competitions that are pretty big worldwide are The Winter X Games, The Winter Olympics, and The Dew Tour. Each of these competitions consists of smaller competitions within them. Slope style, pipe, a...

...e best? Sometimes Burton, Ride, and K2 Snowboards are considered the best but, if you were to look deeper into that you might find a brand like Lobster, or Bataleon Snowboards whose boards are better quality and might be less known. Clothing is some of the ways riders express themselves. If you see a boarder with baggy clothes you might be able to suggest that he or she likes to ride park and hit big jumps. A rider who wears tighter clothing might like to just go down the hill or snowboard in backcountry.
All in all snowboarding is a new experience for some people and those people might go on liking it. For some people it might not be their thing but sooner or later they will get the hang of it. Just to think that snowboarding what it is today used to be pieces of wood that kids would ride down small hills on and that turned into riders doing 1080’s and back flips.
weight depending on the size and height of the rider. The snowboard is measured in inches. Children ride between a 38"-43". Women usually ride between 45"-53. For men, the sizes can run from 55"-65".
The winter X-Games are held in aspen colorado and consist of three basic sporting events where athletes have different objectives. The three categories are snowboards, skis, and snowmobiles, and all have a group for men and women, though no women have competed in any snowmobile events.
Snowmobiling in today’s world is far more exciting and dangerous than it used to be in the 20th century. There are many types of snowmobiles and different capabilities for every make, model, and year. Every single snowmobile is different in its own way. Many snowmobiles have evolved and developed into amazing machines that are a great source of entertainment.
Throughout time, the progression and evolution of snowboarding has increased greatly. It has gone from non existence in the late 1970’s, to one of the most watched action sports in a matter of thirty-five years. The upward takeoff and popularity of snowboarding relies on two people, Jake Burton and Shaun White. Jake Burton back in 1977 had the vision for what snowboarding would be, but Shaun White had what it took to manifest that vision. Evidence has shown that time brings change in sports, history has repeated itself with snowboarding, this history reflects the time & changes that has occurred in America.
Imagine being on the top of the world, on a bitter cold mountain, over top of an enormous crowd. Below where you stand, the lustrous lights are shining on a massive jump, that seems larger than the mountain itself, created for the professional snowboard competition. This gargantuan jump will decide whether you win or lose the competition. Becoming a professional snowboarder has been a dream to me ever since I first was beginning to snowboard. Being on top of the enormous slope and strapping into my bindings instantly made me relaxed and put a grin larger than the slope itself on my face. Everytime I glide down the face of the mountain I become focused and dialed in on my riding. When becoming a professional snowboarder as an occupation, I would
Interestingly enough, snowboarding was invented by Sherman Poppen in North Muskegon, Michigan, back in 1965. Nowadays, snowboarding is considered one of the most popular winter sports among teenagers. On the other hand, there are many people that don’t have the slightest idea how to ride a snowboard straight down a hill. There are four steps to learn the basic skills of snowboarding.
Snowboarding is a new sport that is very challenging and exhilarating and is attracting new fans all around the world. Snowboarding has really changed since it was first invented. It has become one of the fastest growing sports in America and the world.
In snowboard as in any other sport the athlete has to be thinking at all times, analyzing the situation that surrounds you, make split decisions, and even perform quick calculations in your head.
That thing was probably the most horrible thing I have ever seen. I have never been in contact with such a space consuming thing. It moved with a lack of elegance and fluidity. Snowboarders are probably the most annoying people on the earth. Don’t we have enough board related sports? Who had even invented the art of snowboarding? I had first learned to ski at the age of six, and had never even thought of learning how to snowboard. I was even annoyed at other snowboarder’s presence on the slopes and their laid back way of life. All I knew was skiing, and I loved it. When I asked my family what they thought about my skiing they said that I had a certain unique touch to it. Ever since I had learned how to ski, I had just wanted to get better and I was
A few winters ago, some friends invited my family and me to go snow skiing at Paoli Peaks, Indiana. I did not know how to snow ski, and I leaped at the thought of trying this new sport. On the first morning we entered the pro shop to rent all the gear and make decisions about whether or not to take lessons or go it alone. We decided to be adventurous and go it alone—no lessons. Kent and Celeste, the friends who invited us, knew how to ski and snowboard. He assured us that he could show us the basics, and we would be on our way down the slopes. All of us, after a few minutes learning how to wedge our skis started down the family trail. Although the family trail had smaller hills and appeared safe, to me it seemed way
If you can’t tell snowmobiling is a huge part of my life. It’s a good way to lose weight and have fun. You can see who is the best of the best in your group and see who the weak one is that day, but always be safe and don’t go riding by yourself and not tell no one. Start young and ride till you die and always be
One can't enjoy snowboarding or claim to like it, until one tries it, without the experience its impossible to say you enjoyed it. Correct? Or do you think its already embedded in you're genes that you'll like snowboarding. Unlikely right? Exactly, experiences and influences are what make us who we are. On the other hand think about it, what if you went snowboarding for the first time and broke your arm; deciding then that you hated snowboarding. Well then it couldn't have been embedded in your genes that you'd like it.
Snow is a concept that only a few people really know about. It seems like most people hate snow with a burning passion. However, the true northerners praise every day that it snows; mostly because it does not happen a lot. At one point everyone that participates in a snow sport has to hope that it will snow every winter. Unfortunately, our hopes and dreams do not always come true. That was why snowmaking was developed in the 1980s and has been upgraded every year so maximum snow production is possible. The first reason was to fill in the gaps that Mother Nature left out. However, now the amount of snow we receive is drastically less than what it used to be. Instead of making snow to fill in the gaps, we have to make most of the snow we ski
Skiing and snowboarding are two very different sports, that have evolved and morphed together to define an entire global industry and are now tantamount as salt and pepper. Skiing was popularized decades before the conception of snowboarding however, snowboarding was conceptualized in part, by skiing. Skiing became a mainstay when it was introduced to the Olympics, it quickly grew to dominate winter sports all over the world. The world was shocked when snowboarding made its way onto the Olympics roster and was perplexed by the influence it carried. The two sports were at war from the beginning, clashing in every possible way. As skiing and snowboarding grew and evolved, so did the winter sports industry. These sports spawned a new generation of athletes, with new trends and ideas, which have completely resuscitated the snow sports industry.
Challenge plays an essential role in defining a sport; it provides the individual with the feeling of achievement in success. Skiing poses challenge even in its simplest foundations. Skiing on a poor quality hill, with icy snow and poor upkeep can sometimes create more challenge than a well-groomed slope. Skiing in the backcountry away from lifts and other people in freshly fallen snow provides an opportunity for the best of skiers to test t...
