The Sniper Analysis The thirty-fourth president of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, once said, “I hate war as only a soldier who has seen its brutality, its fatality, and its stupidity.” This quote and pertains to the sniper since in the short story Liam O 'flaherty declares about a young man in the story is on a roof fighting in the civil war in Ireland. O 'flaherty writes this short story about a sniper fighting in the war to describe how brutal warfare is. One way that is used to describe how horrible combat is. Liam describe how the warrior has not eaten for a long period of time, and when he finally does get to eat he only chows down a small sandwich. The sniper is about a civil war in Ireland, this is comparable to the horrific things that are happening to the citizens of syria who are fleeing from their country for a better life due to the unbearable and horrible conditions of living there (Rodgers, 2015). Also, the rebellion of muslims in the country has caused people who should not being doing things they are such as using children and women as weapons just like Liam uses an old lady to search for snipers in his story (Rodgers, 2015). Liam O 'flaherty describes the sacrifices you have to make while you are at battle such as when he describes how the sniper has not eaten for the longest time and when he does all he has is small sandwich that he gulps down extremely fast. This sacrifice is comparable to the ones that were made in the Siege of Leningrad where one million lives were taken in nine hundred days after Germany invaded the Soviet Union and the warriors were stuck in the brutal cold (Crowley,1996). Liam express an excellent amount of tension when he states the sniper gets shot in the arm and has to use his knife to cut his parapet off and cut open his stuff for bullet wounds so he can have a greater chance of surviving, since O 'flaherty gives us a good description we can Liam wrote the short story to describe to the reader the horrible way of life for the soldier that have to fight. He does an excellent job of describing the sacrifice and brutality that warriors go through to defend for their country and the pride they take in the defending of their country or belief. If the author does not write about this then the reader or the people of the world might not realize what a warrior has to go through to defend for their country or belief. The whole reason he wrote this was to give sympathy to the snipers who have go through and live their life with the fact that the killed someone. Also, this was wrote to inform the reader what the soldiers do for the people of what is being fought for. Throughout the novel, the protagonist was disgusted by the blood and trauma war brings, however, he knew that it was imperative to kill, or else he would not have survived. Liam O’Flaherty’s realistic fiction story, “The Sniper,” takes place in Dublin, Ireland, where there is a civil war waging between Republicans and Free Staters. The Republican sniper, who is the main character in the story, is fighting in the civil war for the Republican organization. There are numerous amounts of people who are attempting to assassinate the sniper because of his organization, and his enemies are located all around him waiting patiently until they gain their chance. The Republican sniper, however, leaps before he looks most times, thus leading to severe consequences throughout the story. The main character of “The Sniper” is the republican sniper and the main character of the “Cranes” is Songsam. In “The Sniper”, the sniper is in a war and he is trying to kill his enemy. At the beginning of the story, he is on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge lay watching. Beside him lay his rifle and over his shoulders was slung pair of field glasses. He looked like he was a student. He was self disciplined but was extremely devoted towards the war. He was eating a sandwich because he eaten nothing since morning. He is going to smoke but he paused and thought whether he should or shouldn’t but he did. In the “Cranes”, Korean War is going on. During this war, many villages along the thirty-eighth parallel changed hands several times.
The basic plot of the story is based during an evening within the Irish civil wars. It tells of a republican sniper sitting on a rooftop and neutralising enemy units as the cross a bridge. When a free-states sniper shows himself on an opposite roof they wage a fierce and innovative war to see who would end up the better. Eventually the republican sniper gains the upper hand and after taking a bullet in the arm destroys the worthy opponent. After a curious inspection to the identity of the enemy sniper he finds himself looking into the eyes of his dead brother.
O Brien's point of view is an accurate one as he himself because he is a Vietnam veteran. The title of the short story is meaningful because it describes each soldier’s personality and how he handles conflict within the mind and outside of the body during times of strife. The title fits the life of a soldier perfectly because it shows the reality that war is more than just strategy and attacking of forces. O’Brien narrates the story from two points of view: as the author and the view of the characters. His style keeps the reader informed on both the background of things and the story itself at the same time.
The mood of the story is dark and weary. In this scene the sky is gloomy and there are Republican and Free Starter soldiers fighting in the Irish Civil war, “The long June twilight faded into the night. Dublin lay enveloped in darkness but for the dim light of the moon that shone through the fleecy clouds.. machine guns and rifles broke the silence of the night, spasmodically” (O’Flaherty 1). Although the mood of the story is creepy and dim for the most part, it is silent with the sudden sounds of guns firing. As the story progresses, the sniper’s emotions begin reflecting on his actions. He begins to feel guilt and remorse for killing someone and the mood shifts to tension and violence.
Birdy, who is a new soldier, fears that he will end up dead during the war. He said,“Then I realized that it was the noise, the constant booming, that just filled my guts with a trembling sensation. I knew if I heard the boom I was safe because whatever had exploded hadn't hit me. But it was the idea that at any moment it could be all over, that I could be dead or lie in the sand twisting in agony, that filled me with a terror that I hadn't known before. Terror. It wasn't just being scared. It was a feeling that was taking me over. I knew it but I hoped no one else saw it,” (Myers 71). In “The Sniper” the conflict is man vs man, which means main character is tasked with killing his enemy, but it proves to be quite a challenge. Even though there were many challenges the sniper followed through with his job and persevered even after he was shot in the arm. Wanting to kill his enemy, stay alive, and be one step closer to ending the war was his main goals. Being brave, he took off his hat, placed it on his gun, and raised it above the edge of the roof. Instantly the enemy shot at it and the sniper, pretending to be dead, waited until the enemy got up for him to shoot him. He did some quick thinking and, with determination, handled the conflict quite well.
The setting to “The Sniper” plays a vital role in understanding the meaning O’Flaherty was trying to convey. The main character is sitting on a rooftop near O’Connell Bridge in Dublin Ireland.
