Smoking is not only one of the most dangerous things a person can do, but it is also one of the most deadly. Smoking is when one both inhales and exhales toxic fumes from cigarettes (“What is Smoking?”). Cigarettes contain a very addictive substance called nicotine. Nicotine is what gets these individuals hooked on smoking and can potentially be the reason why their lives will be ruined forever. Many people do not realize how life threatening smoking can be which is a really big problem. “Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. Many people start smoking in their teenage years and this is due to negative influences they encounter. According to Help with Smoking, they mention how smoking begins at a young age and how those people “do not reali[z]e how addictive smoking can be. As a teenager[,] you probably think that you can try smoking a few times and then take it or leave it” (“Help with Smoking”). In other words, teenagers will be able to experience smoking and decide whether they will continue based off of their experience. That is what Help with Smoking is trying to convey to its audience. But the message they are trying to get across is that people will most likely continue due to negative influences such as peer pressure, what happens within their environment, and even for physical reasons. (“Help with Smoking”). That is what really impacts the decisions of the people who smoke. Smoking affects the body by destructing everything in its path. Centers for Disease Control states the same thing. The damages people will eventually have to face are that “[c]igarette smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causes many diseases, and reduces the health of smokers in general” (“Health Effects of…”). Based off of this, it is a fact that there are many dangers of smoking that are caused to specific parts of the human body. The number of things smoking can affect is endless, but some of the main things cigarette smoking eventually harm in future days to come are the heart, the lungs, the brain, and mouth and throat. When it comes to the heart, smoking can cause such a high risk of "coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and cerebrovascular disease" to occur (“How Smoking Affects…”). Cigarette smoking is what leads to this type of damage and if help is not met at a certain point, the results previously mentioned will be the consequences a person will have to face. Lungs are another area of the body smoking can affect. It starts out by a person experiencing “coughs, colds, wheezing, and asthma”, eventually leading to more severe outcomes such as “pneumonia, emphysema and lung cancer” (“How Smoking Affects…”).
